Cleaning up those BlackBerry rumors
So you might have seen a couple things floating around on the BlackBerry 9000 lately. One of them is that Fortune recently went ahead and declared an August release for the device. The other is that a RIM "spokesperson" claims that the reason we’re now hearing battery life issues is because power management is usually turned off to "help with debugging". Let’s break this down a bit. First…the power issues:
I’m all for corporate spin, but for them to have the audacity to even hint there are no power issues is an insult to all people with an IQ of, let’s say, over 70. Let me preface this by saying I have had an extremely early prototype of every single BlackBerry device since the Pearl 8100, and have never, not ever, not once, had battery life issues. Not even with the buggiest of beta software and not final hardware. The reason the BlackBerry 9000 has power issues is because of the new 624MHz Intel processor RIM is using along with the 3G chip. I may sound like a broken record here (do they make those anymore?) but using an archaic operating system and dressing it up ain’t gonna help. Putting lip stick on a pig does not make it a pretty girl last time I checked. There are most certainly major power issues with the BlackBerry 9000, hence the delays in the devices release. Which leads me to…
Oh, Fortune. You may remember this little article that was posted about a month ago, you know, the one where we said the BlackBerry 9000 was delayed until July or August? Yes, the very same information you just regurgitated while incorrectly reporting on the BlackBerry 9000’s model and codename. But it’s all good, our readers know who said it first, we just expect a little more from you…
So, why exactly am I bitching? BG, why so agitated? Well, I work hard to deliver all the information I do to our readers and anyone who finds it interesting. Do I care about not getting links? Negatory. Do I care that my exclusive information was republished without my permission into a "new" story a month later? Yes. What if Fortune had their own sources and simply posted what they were told? Then they’re not doing a very good job. Are they that starved for stories that they’re publishing an article a month after it was first broken? That would be like CNN running Election Day coverage a month after MSNBC. Glad I don’t work there…
Am I a complete jerkface for posting this? Am I short on sleep and patience and long on dislike of all things unoriginal and recycled? Do you completely agree with me? Sound off. I want to know your thoughts.

gotta disagree….the power management is not always finished especially when a new chipset has to be supported. The 9000 is the first BlackBerry with a new processor since the 8700, hence a lot of that code probably needs to be written/updated etc.

BGR, No longer clinging to that 8 month old, crappy 9k spy shot??

The could’ve said…
“Over at The Boy Genius Report, -insert post details here-…”
But they didn’t. So I feel you BG.
And yea, the 9000 should most DEFINITELY drop with OS 5.0 (or a least a REALLY good 4.6 build), I understand your frustration. 4.5 is a good UPDATE, but not something that a new line of Blackberries should debut with. I would expect something a bit more substantial.
But hey, that’s RIM. RIM will be RIM.

Considering the amount of time and work you put into this site, I also would be pissed. Would Fortune feel miffed if you ripped one of their stories without giving credit?
Isn’t giving credit a basic concept in reporting?
But remember, BG, the mainstream press doesn’t feel blogs are to be mentioned in the same breath as REAL news outlets.
Dumb f*cking mainstream press. BGR FTW!

I’m confused…so have you held this device? You said you held early devices, but you didn’t specifically say this one.
When I read the article I thought of this site and really thought they were silly for writing incorrect info. But then I wondered well how do we know they are incorrect? Seems like you pick your poison with ANY of these sites.
But yeah, its lame to rehash info from a rumor site as your own. Removes all hope of credibility to recycle info you read on a site that doesn’t provide proof other than random quotes and hear say. I’m not disputing info here, but until you see company rep quotes everything is taken with a grain because the company can change anything it doesn’t say publicly on the fly.

Take ‘em down BG. They stole your story and didn’t give you credit, I believe there are laws(or atleast unwritten rules) about that. But anyway, I’m fine here with my curve, so I’m just kickin’ back and watching the 9000 play itself out.

I can’t help but get the feeling RIM is heading down the Palm road. I hope I’m wrong.

Regardless of the source of the information, if it didn’t come from you, you should post the source, so yes, I agree that Fortune should have posted the source of the info. But at the same time, I also see articles posted on here, days later that I saw elsewhere with no mention of the source. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

You see this one today, from Financial Post blog?
Seems a RIMM official, in an email, noted the devices that have been leaked are only “prototypes”, duh, and that their performance should not be judged prior to the release.
This email said it is customary for “power management protocols” to be disabled on prototype devices as a way to simplify the software debugging process, and said RIMM is “pleased with the speeds and battery performance.”
See my man, j00 just ‘aint getting the emailz.

What is this world coming to when rumor blogs like BG, Engadget, and now engineers of semi companies are sounding off and the financial companies are trading off there news? Anyways let’s clarify some things about your 9000 report. Actually Intel sold it’s arm processor business to Marvell and the new processor in the Blackberry is being provided by Marvell you know the same company that’s providing the iPhone wifi chip, Psp wifi chip, chip inside the xbox 360 wireless adaptor that Microsoft charges alot for, wifi chip that goes inside Ps3, let’s give some props to Marvell for Pete’s sake, my stock is finally moving!!!

I’m a journalist and the very first rule is to acknowledge your sources. Fortune had no right to do wat they did. I understand being mad cuz wen i write a story i put my heart and soul into it, and for someone to come rip you off is terrible. Go get em BG.
