Wii sales remain strong

The Nintendo Wii continues to plow ahead of the competition, posting record sales month after month. According to a recent set of stats released by the NPD group, Nintendo moved 720,000 consoles during the month of April. Whoa! As if that number wasn’t impressive enough, things start to look even crazier when you consider that Microsoft sold just 262,000 XBox 360s, slightly ahead of Sony’s 257,000 PS3s. Nintendo, it seems, is doing something right. The Wii, slotting in at a significantly lower price point than either of its two rivals, has remained in steady demand since its introduction. While Sony’s 257,000 may seem unimpressive, it represents a 98% increase in sales over the same period of time last year. With the upcoming launch of GTA IV on both the PS3 and the XBox 360, Microsoft and Sony should make up some lost ground, but if things continue along these lines, the Wii will most certainly continue to dominate the console wars.

Why is the Wii so popular? Beer + Wii Games = Crazy fun and crazy funny! Plus girls love to play it too so it grabs a larger market than a standard game system. Anything that is fun with beer is a good thing :-)

I swore I’d never buy a Wii, but eventually the kids won out. The PS3 was just way too complicated for little kids to use

I’m 33 years old and video games started to pass me by when controls became so complicated it interfered with the fun. In college I could devote hours to learning the intricate details of a game because I had nothing else to do but study, but these days I just want to pick up something, play it without too much hassle and have fun.

I debated for weeks whether to get the PS3 or Wii, especially b/c I have a large HDTV and wanted the Blue Ray player and HD Graphics. I ended up buying the Wii and love it. It’s just plain fun.

No, the games and graphics aren’t lifelike (but the graphics are still pretty sweet). And I won’t be able to play titles like Halo and GTA IV. But, for someone who has not been a gamer since the days of Sega Genesis and PS1, the Wii is perfect. Anyone can pick it up, play it and have fun and that’s what counts.

I assume they must have ment the month of march since April is not over yet?? I think PS3 sales are going to pick up since they won the HD war.

Actually, it depends on your definition of “winning.”

There’s no denying more Wiis sold in one year than Xbox 360s sold in two years, but if you want to count the dollars, Microsoft’s gaming division announced fiscal 2007 profits that exceeded Nintendo’s by $1.3 billion. It comes down to their one-two whammy of more million-seller games and XBLA… and if the Big N can’t make crossover hits out of titles like Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii (and more of them), that trend is bound to continue.
