S60 Webkit-based Browser Isn’t Going Anywhere
Regarding recent rumors that Nokia may be ditching the current Webkit-based browser found on S60 devices, Peter Harbeson of S60 clears the air:
OK, (ouch) everybody out there (bonk) in the blogosphere just (oof) take a deep (splat) breath! We are not backing away from Webkit no matter what you might have read on one of those new-fangled "website" things…
Harbeson goes on to explain that the focus of the browser team has shifted as of late. S60’s labors with regards to the Tiger branch of the Webkit project have laid idle while attention was turned toward the newer Leopard branch. Development related to Nokia’s recent acquisition of Trolltech is also cited as one of several projects requiring attention from the browser team. Long story short, they’re just busy. So there you have it: Webkit it is.

I’m glad to hear it. I really was wondering if they would shift gear to a Gecko based browser, and frankly I’m glad they aren’t.
Firefox is great, and Gecko is a good rendering engine (and at this point with how widely it’s deployed, becoming one of the standards), but plain and simple WebKit and it’s KHTML roots just work better. Konqueror is one of the fastest browsers on the planet, and Safari (on the Mac at least) is right there with it.
The S60 browser is NOT one of the fastest browsers on the planet, but I think has the potential to be there.
I’ve become a total KHTML/Webkit convert at this point — Safari on OSX, Konqueror on Linux, S60 Browser on my N95, and Safari on my iPod Touch — all work very well.
