Fring Releases Native iPhone Application

File this one under "friggin awesome". In a surprise move today, the folks at fring have announced the availability of a native iPhone application that supports all of the basic fring functionality that we know and love. SIP / VoIP, check. Skype, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM support, check. Skype Out calling, check. Of course you’ll need a jailbroken iPhone to install the app, although fring politically correctly states that you’ll need an "opened" iPhone. If you haven’t freed your iPhone yet then this announcement should leave you all out of excuses.

This special pre-release version of fring, has been developed in conjunction with the Holon Institute of Technology academic research labs in response to iPhone users urging us to let them join the growing community of fringsters in over 180 countries worldwide. During the R&D period, we’ll be listening to feedback, so we can fine tune the final version and create a truly kicking user experience for iPhone users.

As we get ready to fire it up here at BGR, we hope very much that it runs in the background. It must, right? If that is the case it will be interesting to see what fring issues post-AppStore. Perhaps they’ll maintain two versions; a good one for jailbroken handsets and a crippled one for AppStore customers. Either way, fire up your Installer and get fringing!

Does the iPhone version of Fring only work on speakerphone? I know that was an issue on other platforms.

I can’t find in Installer. What’s the source? I went to “All Apps” and still didn’t find it.

    This is an impressive app.

It stays connected if you surf away or even if you put it to sleep. It beeps if you get a message and a number shows up on the homescreen icon.

So far, Skype is a little sketchy… I’ve had trouble signing in a few times, and once I did, my contacts didn’t appear. A couple of calls eventually went through. It may be because fring’s site is being pounded with new iPhone users, so I’m going to wait and try again later.

if the iphone ver is like the windows mobile version, it gets a little iffy at times … it would log me out and i’ll miss chats from friends and not know about it. sometimes i get logged back in, sometimes not.

other than that, i quite like it. its a lot better than some other im clients i’ve used.

Sounds very cool. Its sad though that you have to jailbreak the phone for all these 3rd party apps to work.

    Fring rocks!!!
The application runs perfectly, I never had any problem with Skype as mentioned. I receive calls on skype and call from it normally, I can use skype out with no problems. There is 2 issues though. The first one is that the voice sometimes cuts, but not really a big deal. And the second issue is whenever you get a call when using VOIP the phone freeze.

    Application recommended.

I guess I can say that Fring is the best for now. It does not run in background unless you use backgrounder. And even than it tend to gets disconnected quiet often. I do not get any notification of incoming chat except sound. If I miss the sound there is no notification number on the icon.
On the other hand chat and voice on skype and even google talk is really good.

Since I am fearly new to iPhone. Can someone tell me how to run Fring in background except using backgrounder and why I am not geting notifications.

I am also facing the exact same issue with Fring. I tried using Backgrounder but it still gets discionnected quit often. I dont get any notifications for Gtalk / yahoo messages either. It would be really cool if i can make my phone buzz or beep for any new messages i get on fring. Pleaselet me know if there is any app that will let me do this.
