New iPhone firmware allows you to save web images

It’s the little things that count, right? In addition to information pointing to support for a 3G chipset, a few clever souls have uncovered some interesting new features in the newest developer build of the iPhone software. The most recent version of iPhone firmware 2.0 includes a feature that allows users to easily download and archive images from web pages viewed on Safari. A simple tap + hold brings up a dialog box that provides the option to save the selected image to the Photos application on the iPhone. Pretty sweet. Now when is that 3G iPhone dropping again?

UPDATE: Okay, after some poking around, I found that you can also save images from emails as well. Nice. - BG

I don’t see the point in negative comments about the iPhone…I understand that sites in general might cover it a little too much, but a ton of people are interested in it. And yeah — Opera mini can save images — but that browser looks like a steaming pile of donkey doo compared to the iPhone. Let’s not be so critical when you are running something far inferior, ‘kay?

I dont mind the coverage. I think it is a good mobile device. The only thing I personally like about it is the huge screen and the browswer with touch scroll. I know plenty of people use it and I know people that change from it to other phones. I just think its funny how many major lacks that it has that other far simplar phones have, but yet some people (not saying boy genus report)that endlessly hype the iphone.

What about 3G; GPS with a GPS app; video recording; voice dialing; a better camera; a real camera app with zoom features; a search function; Adobe Flash support; ability to create Groups (Personal, Business) in Contacts; call/SMS blocking feature; ability to use different ringtones for different calls/SMS messages from different individuals and from Unknown Caller or Private numbers; ability to change wallpaper on the lock screen; ability to modify icons/themes on the SpringBoard; notes sync with Outlook; ability to create and copy free ringtones onto the phone; disk access to the phone so that it can be used as a flash drive? I know that some of these features can be achieved by hacking the phone, but they should really be standard on this type of phone.

I bet atleast half the iphone users will think this is some cool feature that Apple invented and that all other Phones/OS are just copying Apple.

….and no, youre not cooler because you have an iphone that someone told you to buy. what a waste of $500 bucks huh?

Everybody that’s finally realizing how shitty this thing is and how EVERY other REAL smartphone is better, thank you. No seriously, thank you for finally seeing what I’ve seen from the very beginning. We actually have more people on here that are like “wow this thing needs useful shit on it” than “wow I’m such a sheep, let’s follow the herd since they’re all getting iPhones I should get one too.”

Yea hate to break it to all the apple fanboys but…WinMo could do this a loooong ass time ago.

Jeff B returns to his trolling roots, I do believe you said in the 3G iphone story that you would be in line to get one, man you must have crazy mood swings.

People enjoy what they do for a reason, that reason is different for everyone and to belittle people for their choice is so stupid. If you like WM then great but to belittle people for their taste is something that exists mainly on anonymous comments where everyone is brave.

I wasn’t knocking the iPhone, I think its an alright device. I was just pointing out that yeas opera minie did in fact have this. Don’t have a cow man, but this is kinda turning into The iPhone Report rather than the Boy Genius Report. Will never knock the boy genius either, just saying that there’s more iPhone posts lately than anything else. I’m not an iPhone hater at all, just kinda tired of it. I’m even considering getting one sooner or later, but don’t wanna give my curve up.

It does all the cool web via wifi and mp3/video… yada yada yada… I just think the iphone isnt a very good “phone” it has a lot of good features and fuctions but as a “phone” its too bulky and I personally hate not having a keyboard I couldnt use it more than 5 min texting.

Has it ever occurred to some of you jackass haters, trolls, that not everyone needs their device do have every feature of the WM devices? Not everyone wants a phone that is a jack of all trades and master of none, which it what the WM devices are. They are buggy, unstable, user UNfriendly, and usually require a lot of hacks or bootleg ROM’s to make it half way usable.

Does it even enter your mind, or lack thereof, that if a person wants or needs to purchase a device (headache) like that, they would just buy it? Much of that the crap that WM has is useless anyway. Edit spreadsheets on a 3″ screen? Gimme a break. And I don’t care what browser you use on them, Opera or PIE, the browsing experience still blows at best. And forget about even the most BASIC reason that people buy a mobile phone anyway: to make calls! I never had a PPC device that was easy to make a simple phone call with. Or had enough battery life to make it though an entire business day.

You can shove as many features into a device that you want but that alone doesn’t make it better. Fact is, with all the bells and whistles of WM devices, they still sorely lack in providing a solid, stable and pleasant user experiance like the iPhone does. For a very short time, you can still argue that WM devices have more features. But you’ll never be able to argue that it’s solid, stable, dependable, and user friendly. Maybe in the years to come when they get to WM 8.blah blah build, they will be able to accomplish something close to that.

When it fact the iPhone has matched WM devices feature for feature, what excuse are you going to use then for still carrying around your Winblows pocket bricks? You little WM zombies are the last people that need to throw the “fanboy” stone. If you need something now for corporate use until the iPhone gets there, at least be smart enough to go with a Blackberry. Stay away from WM.

Which part of the iPhone do you consider “bulky”? And what phone do you carry that is less bulky than an iPhone? Especially that has a keyboard that you could stand texting on for more than 5 min?

@gary: I agree. I may just get an ipod touch
@EvilHomer: I agree with you as well. Windows mobile, at least in it current state, sucks. Which is why I don’t get the hype surrounding the X1. No matter how sexy it is it still winds down to be a windows mobile phone, which brings its value down in my opinion. I’ve had one, ONE windows mobile phone, the shitty t-mobile wing, and that was enough for me to never buy a windows mobile device anytime in the near future. It was straight garbage. I’m content enough with the blackberry curve

The point is the iPhone lacks basic functionality that anything marketed as a smart phone should have. It so far is more of a fashion phone than a smart phone.

Apple knows best what is best for you - there there.

Coming from a guy who doesn’t like the IPhone, its a good phone for what it is. Its just not a smartphone. You can’t send mass txts, hangle and enterprise server, edit docs, or compose them which is really what a smart phone is ment to do in addition to email. The phone is in a class of being too good for a basic phone (think v3xx) but not quite wm status. Its good for what it is. Other phones have other capabilities but they are not as good as the IPhone as a media phone.

You are either an idiot or you cannot read. If you look at the last sentence of my post, I say that some of these features are available on a HACKED phone. But if I pay $400 for a phone, these features should come on the stock phone. And I shouldn’t have to start a new app or purchase one to do a search of my contacts - that is not an advanced feature. Do you get my point now, dumb idiot?

I had a Treo 700w before purchasing the iPhone, and it is truly slow and buggy. I definitely do not want the iPhone to become that way, but I don’t think that it would be too difficult to add a search function within Contacts. And it should not make the phone any slower. If you have a lot of contacts, it is a pain in the neck to flip through screen after screen of contacts or to try to tap on those tiny letters on the right hand side of the phone. I know that much of these features will be available in June via firmware 2.0 or the AppStore, but I just hope that Apple listens to the users of the phone and provides certain features out of the box. I feel embarrassed when I go onto a website (non-porn in some cases) that a friend asks me to look up, and nothing shows up because it only has flash content; or if somebody asks me to look for a contact and it takes me forever to flip through screen after screen of contacts; or if somebody sends me an MMS message and I have no way to view it directly on the phone. That just does not make much sense to me. Apple is better than that, and I have not seen a good reason stated for the lack of such features.
