3G iPhone Rumor Firehose Continues; $399 Starting Price, WWDC Launch

As un-Apple as it sounds, the latest stream from the 3G iPhone rumor firehose brings with it news that the next generation Apple handset could come in at the current iPhone’s price point. TG Daily reportedly spoke to “industry sources” that have shed some new light on the impending and highly anticipated launch of the 3G iPhone. First and foremost, the new breed of iPhone will launch with two or three models available; an 8GB model for $399, a 16GB model for $499 and possibly a 32GB model for $599. If these price points are accurate, we have to wonder of course what this would mean for the first generation iPhone. Will it catch another price drop? Will it go the way of the dinosaur? The next info TG got their hands on relates to the physical design of the iPhone. According to their sources, the new build will shed 2.5mm in the waist and will get a few material revisions that will result in a less plasticky feel on certain areas of the phone. Thinner and less plasticky? If that’s the case then the possible redesign pic seen above from our post last week is certainly a Photoshop job. The final info of worth is an affirmation of the rumored June release. TG reports that the 3G iPhone launch will take place at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) that kicks off on June 9th. Of course this is a definite possibility, but it falls short of our prediction. We stopped taking contest entries yesterday though so don’t go running over to change your entry. So there you have it: We could be less than two months away from a slender new 3G iPhone with a better build and no price hike. What do you think?

I think I’m over it? Had the iphone for 7 months and it’s limitations have finally gotten the best of me. I’ve got an N95 coming on Monday, that should fill that huge hole in my technology heart.

It’s going to suck for LG, putting the Vu out at the end of this month (if it doesn’t get pushed back again, which it probably will) and then shortly after having apple drop the new iphone. I remember the day the iphone launched, no other handset mattered for about 3 months or so. The day the new one drops will be a bad day to be releasing any new data device, including blackberry.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, how can they launch anything without an FCC filing first? Wouldn’t that be a dead giveaway? Since nothing’s been filed, it seems impossible that a new iPhone could come so soon.

How is that un-Apple? Didn’t they come out with new generations of iPods and Macbooks that were improvements and still matched the price points of the previous generation?

Thinner than the current one and 3G? Battery life will suck unless they have VERY efficient electronics.

I also don’t think that a thinner iPhone is very ergonomic IMHO, I have a hard time sometimes with the current one feeling too thin.

I do think that they will definitely keep the prices the same as the current gen. If Apple didn’t have an exclusive agreement with AT&T I would think that they would keep the current one on the line up and sell it cheaper. I think that with the current agreement in the US, they will keep the 2.5G iPhone on the lineup and will knock off at least $100 on each ($299 for the 8GB 2.5G and $399 for the 16GB 2.5G). Maybe even AT&T will start offering the 2.5G for free on a contract. Who knows.

When the new one comes out I will not have any use for it’s 3G since I won’t be moving to AT&T and T-Mo won’t do 1900 MHz 3G. Oh well. I also assume the 3G iPhone will have a different protection system that will eventually be broken but might take a little while.

    @Dizzle-

Companies can have confidentiality agreements set up with the FCC so that the information is not made public until X day. They probably have it set to be released the day after WWDC starts/ends or something like that.

I think Im over the iPhone too. Mine is sitting on the desk at home waiting for its listing on Ebay! I actually missed buttons! I might look at another iPhone when it has a talk/end buttons and what Id really like is a slide out keyboard! I could care less for thinner. It needs good battery life for 3G and get rid of the virtual keypap, it sucks!

My source in Cupertino indicates the 32GB will be a near holiday launch. Pricing sounds right, though internally $549 was the number for 32GB. I agree with 599.

Also the 3G iPhone battery will be 200mAh greater capacity.

Definitely 8GB and 16GB at launch. The extra 200mAh battery in a thinner case has me super excited, though!

My one wish, is a physical ‘back’ button on the iPhone right side, so that you don’t have to use the software or go all the way back to the main window. Either way I’ll be ponying up for a colorware’d one once they come out.

Let’s see if BG will pick me up one otherwise I might pick one up in 32GB form…when apple realizes they can’t sell it for $599 since it will be old technology by then.

At least the rest of it will be…

I can care less if the new model comes with 3G but it wouldn’t hurt to have it, as long as my bill dosent go up.

All i want in this new model is MMS, Copy/Paste, and GPS.

    and FLASH!

At WWDC they launch the 3G iPhone, 8gb for $399 & 16gb for $499. They knock $100 off the old models to get them out the door. At Xmas they ditch the 8gb and relist the 16gb for $399 and a new 32gb for $499. I don’t think you will see them tip the $499 price point again.

heard from a source at at&t that you’ll be able to trade the old one in for the new one (with the same size hard drive) for $100. if this is true (and my source is pretty reliable), what do u have to lose?
