Best Buy reveals Windows XP Eee PC shortcomings?
This could be nothing more than a simple error on Best Buy’s website, but if the specs for the new Windows-XP-equipped Eee PC are indeed correct, it looks like Asus might have some explaining to do. According to BestBuy.com, the newest flavor of Eee PC doesn’t include the original model’s SD memory card reader. Considering the measly 4GB’s of onboard storage, the SD slot allowed for storage upgrades that many Eee-users deemed crucial. Asus also appears to have reduced the warranty from 2 years to 1 year, again without explanation. Sounds a little suspicious to us, but until we get our hands on a production model, we’ll be left searching for answers. Sometimes life can be so cruel.

Asus has been so successful thus far with the Eee, it doesn’t seem possible that they would go backwards when adding XP will only further this success.

The Shorter warranty may be indicative of the fact Win XP will likely contract spy/malware and thus reduce it’s useful lifespan.

Several sites have already posted reviews of the XP model, pointing out the fact that it comes with a 4GB SDHC card, so this seems a bit silly. I’m fairly certain it was just a typo/oversight, although I’m willing to bet that the warranty difference is intentional. They have to cut corners somewhere to sell the Linux and Windows models for the same price.

I noticed this same description on Sunday when bestbuy.com put this up on the web. I was torn as I am looking for a compact notebook like the EEE PC. So I made contact with another web writer who had a hands on review of the unit before it hit the warehouse racks. He spoke with and confirmed with the contact at Asus that there are two versions of the EEEPC being sold, on for 469usd which includes a 4g SDHC card (and will be available for a limited time and the 399usd model which doesn’t have the SDHC but it will have the reader. This was confirmed when I personally spoke with tech support as well as members of the pre-sales team at Asus who stated that all EEE PCs have the SDHC slot on them and that Best Buy will not have a version that lacks this feature. I’ve ordered the 399usd version from bestbuy.com and I will repost here to confirm that it has all the features of the Linux model.

Best Buy says the Linux version does not come with a touch pad and we all know that this is BS. I am going with typo. FYI Asus released a very similar deal in Japan a couple of months ago and it comes with the 4gb SDHC card that was mentioned in a previous comment.

Bestbuy.com’s spec sheets are only meant as guide lines and not full on hard facts. We always recommend that customers check manufacturer websites for full technical details. This is more than likely information that has been left out because, at the time of input, the information was not supplied to Best Buy.

Ok, so I just received my EEE PC w/ XP and it does in fact have the MMC/SD reader. What it doesn’t have which I don’t know for certain but may only come with the 8gb Linux models is the notebook pouch to place it in. Also the OS and pre-installed software eats 3.7g on the SSD leaving just 722mb available. No worries though as you can slap in your SDHC card in the side and expand that or you can add a portable hard drive via one of the three usb ports if you want to have all of your various programs at your disposal. I think that an inset trackball would have been a better feature than the touch pad but that is just personal preference.

Update on my previous post. After a little more time with the machine I found that the available space on the SSD changed from 722 to 1.22g Interesting.
