3G iPhone coming within 60 days

Let the games begin! Everyone’s favorite tech Godfather, Walt Mossberg, has just dropped a bit of a bombshell on us. The Wall Street Journal’s resident guru nonchalantly revealed in a recent interview that we would be seeing a 3G-capable iPhone within the next 60 days. Given the recent supply issues, big ticket Apple order rumors, and off-hand statements from luminaries such as AT&T CEO Ralph De La Vega, we’re not entirely surprised by this bit of info, but 60 days still places us just before this year’s WWDC. No word on any other feature improvements, or aesthetic changes, though. If it looks anything like the black prototype we’ve recently uncovered, you won’t hear any complaints on our end.

But is AT&T ready to deploy 3G in all areas?? Theres still a lot of markets out there with no 3g deployment. I live up in White Plains NY and get no 3G at all still, only EDGE. Even if it is a new iphone I wont be getting one if AT&T doesnt start increasing the 3G range all over.

I really don’t think the depth of AT&T’s 3g rollout matters at all. The fact is most large cities have 3g, as do most foreign countries. Apple is missing out on a huge segment of the market (myself included) that refuse to pay $500 for a phone that is slower than most free phones. Maybe you won’t get one but I will, and so will many others. AT&T really needs to hit 3g to it can tap the foreign market to make its numbers. Remember, the phone will still work on older EDGE networks so this really doesn’t leave anyone out.

@Jaws Dude, are you serious? VZW passed on the iPhone. VZW is dead to Apple. Not to mention the 5-year exclusivity agreement with AT&T in the U.S.

If the 3G iphone were VZW, I think we would have heard some rumblings leaked from apple or VZW by now. It would be kewl if VZW got the iphone, but I doubt it is true.

The 3g area is small, but so are the amount of actual subscribers who do and would utilize the service. I happen to have moved to a 3g area recently and it’s ok. The browsing is faster, but quite frankly the internet sucks on everything else once you have used the safari browser on the iPhone.

The new iPhone will be nice, 3g, mms, and gps. I might finally trade in the trusty old BB pearl.

And VZW can’t have the iPhone. They signed an exclusive contract with at&t. Besides why would apple waste time making a CDMA version?

GSM and CDMA 3G technologies cannot work on the same platform anyway from a technical standpoint, so that birdie you’re talking about ate some bad worms and smoked some crack. :)

VZW sucks on most levels, and the only phones that should have 3G should be smartphones and media centric devices (select dumbphones), in nowhere there does the iPhone make the cut.
Besides who the hell said it was going to have GPS? If apple couldn’t fit a 3G antennae in there in the first place then how do you expect them to fit in a 3G AND GPS antennae???

They begin this year and should have it completed sometime around 2010 according to their press release. The 700 mhz win should be interesting. Curious as to how they will use it with the change.

I think I want an iphone now. Ppl talk about edge as if it’s slower than a snail stuck in molasses. As long as I can talk and text I’m good. 3g is just good for killing ya battery anyway…no I’m not a 3g “basher” I’m just saying I would’ve got the first iphone if it woulda had a 2MP camera at least, and was able to do videos and MMS. Not bcuz it didn’t have 3g.

Really no need to call others “retards” is there? “Lazy” sure.

Now the guys who said the 3g iPhone would use CDMA, interesting thought but THAT would be retarded. ATT already has to pay APPL a share of all service revenue, they would want to pay their arch enemy VZW a share too? Not a sound business model.

Really man, its not that serious, be easy…
AT&T has been planning to expand their 3g market for a long time, its not like no one knew. However their rollout hasnt been exactly fast as lightning. Granted their way faster then T-Mobile in that department. But its not like it doesnt mean that AT&T may not make it in time for the 3G iphone release. Just because a few select major cities have 3g doesnt mean everyone will go for it. You know how many ppl work in those cites but dont live in them? Why get a service you’ll only have access to when your at work when you can’t enjoy it as much as compared to when your off and staying where you actually live. Compare those numbers as compared to the area EDGE covers, apple will sell a lot sure, but no where near the numbers the first iphone has so far unless AT&T really crank out those towers, which only time will tell if they do.

Well here in Denmark we have a lot of phones with both GPS and 3G, Nokia is the leading company in that area.
So if Nokia can fit it in their phones, why shouldnt apple be able to?
