AT&T cutting back due to worries about U.S. economy
Despite their relative success in recent months, it looks like AT&T might be feeling a bit of the economic burn currently sweeping through the country. The company is offering voluntary severance packages to VP-level executives, hoping that they’ll take the bait and move on to less tumultuous pastures. If the execs choose not to take the package, sources indicate that they will be subject to demotion and pay cuts. Yikes! Cutting back on the general labor force is one thing, but high level moves like this generally indicate that something more serious is afoot. No word on how many execs AT&T hopes will step down, but we’ll certainly have more info in the coming days. Best start counting those pennies, folks!

This may have to do with the following.
1. Merger with SBC
2. Merger with BellSouth
3. Purchase of IBM Network Services Division
All of these mergers create thousands of redundant positions. I would suspect this is not a surprise to anyone at AT&T.

Jim posted what I was thinking. All those mergers created an influx of redundant positions. This is the “saving grace” move so there is no humiliation of being laid-off.

YEA Baby , get rid of the bloat, and I’m sure there is lots of useless bloat sitting around polishing there leather chairs wit there Armoney suits.
Hey then we can have cheaper rates

Just what I was thinking. They are getting rid of a lot of redundant positions.
Unless all those jail broken iPhones are really hitting home? Is jail breaking really a victimless crime?

“Why can’t Galvatron spell?”
If it were just the spelling it would be OK. The problem seems to run deeper than that. He (she?) seems unable to express a cogent thought.

Galvatron is in too much of a hurry to actually read the comment before hitting “submit comment”
Or just retarded.

Can’t we all just be a little more optimistic about this stuff? ‘The economy is falling’ is the first knee-jerk reaction to what sounds to me like some well-needed chaff-cutting.
And besides, I’m looking for a job! Tell people the economy is doing great so I’ll get hired, willya?

If att cuts back does that actually mean lower rates or just less ability to find the phone you want?

Being a former employee from wayback-i.e. Bellsouth Mobility….I’m really surprised that it has taken this long for ‘real’ cutbacks to occur. Just goes to show you how much Ma Bell has been making all these years. I still know former co-workers who are still there and a little worried to say the least!
And to answer the question-no, there will not be lower rates, the cream-of-the-crop are just ensuring that they keep the same amount of profit in their pockets.

I just wanted a COMPLETELY UNLIMITED package including DATA for ALL PHONES, PDA’S, BLACKBERRY’S etc for the SAME price as Sprint has it. Is that TOO much to ask?

No other carriers will follow suit with Sprint(much to my dismay)…they’re just trying to get back the tons of business that they cut loose(read-cancelled, pissed off)…won’t work though. I mean really…unlimited+no-count Sprint=no-count unlimitedness(is that even a word? Man!-sounding like Galvatron again!)
