iPhone firmware 2.0? New screenshot walkthrough!

As you may or may not have heard, there’s this new iPhone firmware build, 2.0, that’s just been seeded to developers. We’ve got a hold of it, and we’re going to show you the new features and settings that we found while messing around with it. For starters, in General settings, the Mail, Contacts, and Calendar menus have all been condensed. This is presumably to make things a little easier to manage, especially if you’re on an Exchange server which we are. We could be wrong on this, but there’s a new "Import SIM Contacts" option in Phone settings, and that doesn’t look like it has been there at all. In fact, this is one feature people were complaining about from the beginning. We haven’t tried it, but it’s definitely there. Exchange syncing works a hell of a lot better than with the previous 1.2 build, and a lot of the bugs that were in the older version are now corrected. There’s a separate Contacts application on the homescreen a la iPod Touch now, and you guessed it! That brings you right to your precious contacts. Sadly the "Spotlight" search feature is not present, but we’re still betting that makes it into the final build. All sample code applications from the Developer run perfectly this time around, and overall the build we’re finding is a lot more stable. Hit us with questions in the comments, and check out the screenshots!

    hey BG,

ive been searching the web for some info on what exactly happens when you enable parnetal controls on the iPhone/ iPod Touch. does it completely disable the things you turn it on for, or is it like a filter. some screenshots of that would be greatly appreciated for convincing my parents that an iPod Touch would be okay.

    thanks,

Alright, we can see this was done after BGR posted the youtube plugin news… yet there was nothing shown about it?

Can we see if/how this works?

    @ Kyle

    You are an idiot.

When you have parental controls on and turn off something, for instance, YouTube, the app is no longer available to use. It completely removes it off the homescreen. No filters of any kind, it just blocks all access. Hope this helps!

What happened to the Interface menu that was shown on your last 2.0 gallery? Or was that gallery from an already “Pwned” iPhone?

Also yea, show a little bit about this YouTube plugin, the photos you have posted of the YouTube site is the same as it loads on 1.1.4.

I also want to know what happened to the interface menu. Also, is the calculator more filled out? (There was a 2nd button there so i presume more functions are coming).

BG, is this iPhone solution for email enough for you to give up your BB?

That’s a tough one man…Put it like this, I will always have both, but if someone said you could only pick one, in the current state the iPhone is in, I would say no and keep the BlackBerry. But, in the final 2.0 build I would choose the iPhone hands down. The only reason I wouldn’t take it now is that this is obviously still an early beta and there are 3 months left for Apple to bang out the little bug fixes and stability issues, but yeah, bye bye BlackBerry come June (if I had to choose one over the other). RIM is going to have an incredibly tough time fending off the iPhone with Exchange + 3G and possibly GPS. That along with the AppStore and SDK is going to give them a real hard time.

I clarified this in the other 2.0 post. The “Interface” menu is 3rd party and was installed so I could take screenshots to show to everyone. It is not part of the iPhone firmware.

    Thanks BG,

I was actually thinking that afterwards, that it was probably the new extended preferences menu or something. I’m with BG, right now I have both a BB and the iPhone but come June I’m going to fully switch over to the iPhone. Still wish there was Flash though, haha.

So do you have the iPhone connected to your exchange server? Are things actually working properly? Are emails and calendar items being pushed fairly quickly? Thanks for all the info!

what about HTML email via exchange? I know on a WM6 device POP/IMAP supports this but you need Exchange 2007 in order to get HTML exchange email. Can you confirm / deny this?

    BG,

When the press conference happened the AOL guy said he was running his aim for a week or so… I heard that this 2.0 doesnt allow apps to run while a phone is being placed or in the background. So does this mean the AOL guy lied? Or will their be a fix to that issue with aim?

    @ Taveanator

HTML is actually part of the Mail application so it doesn’t rely on the Exchange server. Exchange 2003 and 2007 will both give you full HTML email with the 2.0 firmware.

    @ Prolific

I’m guessing that was just done as a demo. If you notice, they never left the AIM application during the presentation, so we didn’t get a chance to see it work in “background” mode. Regardless, Apple has something up it’s sleeve, and said they were really excited to releasing AIM. Either way, whether we have iChat with video conferencing or AIM, or both, we’ll have something!
