Microsoft to Johnny Knoxville: We need your help
We love awkward celebrity endorsements as much as the next guy, but this one might just take the cake. An email sent out by Microsoft to an anonymous focus group recently hinted at the possibility of Johnny Knoxville joining the ranks for a publicity campaign. Knoxville appears set to star in a series of ads aimed at countering the Justin Long-sourced Mac vs. PC ads that have become all but synonymous with Apple’s recent marketing track. Great. Copycat ad campaigns are so fun. On the upside, it looks like we might get to see Knoxville inflicting some physical damage on a comptuer or two, so we won’t judge too savagely just yet.

I think this is a great idea only if they do not copy the Mac Vs PC ads. Having a persona like that would work for the consumer image of Microsoft if they play it right.

Vista finally drove me to try Linux on my Laptop. I can finally use all of the power of my Dual Core Lenovo T61 with 4GB of ram without having the system BSOD or fall over from memory leaks…
Oh, and it’s free. (Free as in Freedom, Free as in Beer)

Copycat is a great way to show you’re better than them (sarcasm). I like how Ford started copying Toyota’s approach with their truck advertising. Except, not only are the Ford copycat commercials pretty bad, they are fake. The one with the F150 spinning around in a room while being attached to nothing but a bolt was so animated. You can actually tell if you actually just focus on the truck you can see glitches in the animation where they fail to match the speed of the rotating truck with graphics and it looks cartoonish at certain points.
At least the Toyota ones are somewhat real.

I just got my XPS 420 with Vista Ultimate, and I love the damn thing!
I have nothing against Macs, I actually like them also, but I can’t just bring myself to spend that kind of money on a Mac.

Johnny Knoxville as a PC and Wee Man as the Mac Mini in a boxing ring! best commercial ever even if it kind of a copy cat of the mac ads. get whats his name to do the party boy dance as an iPod Nano with the music in the background! and get Steveo’s dumb ass in there as a linux machine!

Yeah, what a hoot that will be.
I remember when Microsoft tried to do a print campaign for a “switcher” from Mac to PC. Unfortunately, the switcher turned out to be an employee of the marketing firm doing the ad, she wasn’t really a switcher, and they used a stock photo because they wanted the switcher to be actually attractive.
So what is one to conclude? That they did it because they could not find a single credible person who had switched from Mac to PC!
How rich is that?

I can’t wait to see what they come up with. Either it’ll make MS look cool (which would have to be an awesome marketing campaign) or it’ll be unintentionally hilarious. I guess it could just be lame, leading to those intolerable Apple fans increasing their sappy smugness.

Desperate men do desperate things… Johnny Knocksville doing TV ads for Microsoft? That’s kinda like Paris Hilton doing ads for encyclopedias. Now Lewis Black would be hella cool!
