Sprint to give dumb-phones real web browser

With financial ruin staring them down the barrel, sprint is really pulling out all of the stops. The next revolution? A "real" web-browser for it’s entire line of internet-capable handsets. Sounds interesting. The company has just announced that they will be providing a "desktop-like" browsing experience for "virtually all" of its handsets. We certainly question the "desktop-like" statement, but anything that brings a more pleasant browsing experience to as many phones as possible is a winner in our book. The browser itself will be based on Openwave’s Openweb framework, and should be available soon, though no specific launch date has been revealed.

This is nice and all, how about MMS for the smartphone people? While were on the topic of things lacking, how about Sprint TV for the smartphones (Mogul, BB8830, etc) as well? We already pay for these with our data plans. Congrats to the people at least getting something improved by Sprint. Can the rest of us get the same functionality as the “dumb phones”?

yea, make sure the dumb phones can do as much as the people who paid $500 for a phone with no mms, sprint tv, or nascar (Mogul).

There is already a real browser for some of them. I’ve used Opera mini on an LG PM325 and then an LG Fusic for over three years.

Sprint has more problems than can be fixed with a web browser. I used to have a phone card with them years back. One day they called out of the blue and rudely demanded $70 for a past due bill. I checked my records and saw that I already paid it. They became more rude and even shouted at me on the phone. I mailed them the canceled check and they lost it. I mailed it a second time and they left me alone. When the time came to get a cell phone I made sure to stear clear of them. I’ve been with T-mobile for three years and pay a little over $70 a month for service. Customer service is the real place sprint is lacking. I’m a loyal customer and they killed our relationship with poor record keeping and rudeness. Web browsing on a phone won’t fix that.
