Playstation 3 Blu-ray drive to get massive update

Better late than never, right? Sony has just announced that it will be releasing a massive firmware update for the on-board PS3 Blu-ray drives. The biggest change will be the upgrade to Blur-ray Profile 2.0, which will bring full online support for any Blu-ray titles that offer Profile 2.0 content. The first two titles with such connectivity will be The Sixth Day, and Walk Hard, with many more to follow. Other enhancements will include better DivX and WMV support, more stable PSP interaction, and a more pleasant web browsing experience. All told, this is a worthy update that brings the PS3 in line with many higher-end Blu-ray players currently on the market. Expect to see this hit consoles by the end of March.

My PS3 Blu-Ray just died too, about 13 months old. It starts to load the game, then locks up. will play HDD based games, so it’s not the system. Also, a quick google search will show this to be many more than the two people (now 4 people) who have read this thread and reported their drive dead. If you take a sec and thinka bout how many poeople have a ps3, and of those, how many have read this thread, and of those how many have had their drive fail, and of those how many actually bothered to report it here… 4 could likely represent tens to hundreds of thousands..

My Blu-Ray drive failed after only a few uses but I didn’t contact Sony in time to get it fixed under warranty. This was truly just a few times use, about 3-4 hours each time and it failed. The Blu-Ray drives in these PS3’s are defective and Sony needs to step up to the plate with a recall. I will not pay them $150 to fix a defective product. They need to do a recall! I hope someone puts together a class action lawsuit on this. I think it’s only a matter of time since the problem is so widespread.

Same here– our 80G PS3 won’t read any BluRays, or PS3 games. I’ve downloaded the 2.70 update with no effect. It went down at 11.5 months. We didn’t get our act together to get it in for warranty work, and now we’re out of luck. Just a horrible product, (especially for the big $$) in my opinion.

After 16 months, my blu ray stopped working.

$149 to get it replaced, at least 3 weeks without my PS3.

There has to be hundreds of thousands of PS3 owners who have had their blu ray drive stop working. How many more does it take before Sony recalls this? Reimburse those of us who have already paid and replace those whose drives haven’t died yet. They will though!

I cant believe how many posts I have read about thousands of others with the same problem. What a JOKE!

Looks like Im going to have to take back all the bad things I have said to my X-Box friends and join there team. Sigh, how am I going to ever recoop my investment… Im very sad today..!
