It looks like Apple has a few tricks up its sleeves. The company has been caught red handed, filing a publicly available patent for a "Dual Sided Flip" form factor. The patent describes a two-piece touchscreen interface that provides contextually distinct interfaces depending on the which program is currently running. When the flip closes, yet another touchscreen appears, providing a total of 3 capacitive input screens. How sweet. As with all things Apple and"early patent" related, this could amount to nothing more than the dashed dreams of an idealistic designer. That said, if something like this did manage to make its way to market, we couldn’t be the least bit upset.
Myself, I like the design they have now. I am not a fan at all of flip phones. My guess, apple is just patenting things so others can not get the one up on them… and this phone does not really fit with the iPod and iPhone look.

If you consider Apple’s procedure for designing hardware (on one of the days, people come up with crazy ideas before even thinking about how to do them), then things like this could probably come from that. I don’t think a prediction should be made based on every patent out there, though I wouldn’t doubt Apple coming out with a $200 or less iPhone just for the people with simpler purposes.

I’d actually appreciate that better…too bad for them I am a crackberry whore…but I dunno if hell freezes over and iphone actually has a os that doesn’t freeze I might go for it.

Seems possible to me. iPhone becomes the iPhone Classic, and Apple introduces the iPhone Flip and iPhone Slide. I can see that for 3 reasons: 1) Apple is not a one trick pony
2) Cell phones are one of the very few devices that actually age faster than computers do
3) Apple is going to want to tap the rest of the phone market spectrum, some people will not even consider a phone that is not a flip or a slider
