AT&T Customers, Say Hello to the BlackBerry 8120

It’s ‘out with the old and in with the new’ for BlackBerry fans in the US today as AT&T has finally begun issuing the RIM handset that we first heard about last summer. That’s right, it’s time to ditch that old Pearl you’ve been hanging on to and make room for a shiny new… Pearl. It certainly doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles that other AT&T smartphones might grant you, but the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 is perfect for users who want a compact business messenger with a touch of consumer goodness. Current Pearl owners will be happy to know that the 8120 does indeed come equipped with WiFi, but saddened to learn that GPS has been omitted once again. Highlights beyond the addition of WiFi include a slight bump in camera resolution from 1.3 to 2 megapixels, video recording capabilities and the upgraded web browser. All this can be yours through the AT&T Business Center for just $200 after rebates and two more years of your mobile life. Sweet. Just don’t get too excited because you know the BlackBerry 8110 ain’t far behind.

It would have been nice if they had changed the color. The scheme looks exactly the same as the old one. Also, leaving out the gps I think was a mistake.

I had (and loved) the AT&T EDGE Pearl, but my company switched to VZW. Yes, better camera, external memory, LOCKED GPS, but the 3G on it is worthless unless I just want it for tethering. Via the BB Browser or Opera, web sites are just as slow as my EDGE Pearl was, but EDGE is everywhere, EVDO doesn’t even get into any of my offices.

I do, however, admit this is location specific – EVDO BB Pearl sucks in Portland, OR compared to the EDGE version.

    Yawn.
I don’t see any particular reason to upgrade from my 8100 to the 81xx. I don’t want WiFi or a better camera.

I would like to have the new 4.5 Operating System, but the 81xx phones don’t have that.

I would like to have 3G, but the 81xx phones don’t have that.

I am guessing that the iPhone will have 3G before any Blackberry.

Why? I don’t understand why any ATT customer would get excited about a wifi/uma phone when ATT doesn’t support UMA

Yeah and then right after you get your iphone with exchange which will have ten times the issues blackberry users have ever had you can look like a complete tard trying to type an email. Leave the iphone to 16 year old girls. We all know blackberry is the most solid device when it comes to email.

Hmm cant edit post. Ignore my comment, 4.3.1 is 4.5, the new pearls have 4.3.0 which is the latest OS availabe to public.

Hey BG can you compare the speed of this Wifi to Edge?
While back you compared Tmobile curve and the Edge. The result was that Wifi was slower?
Wonder if this is the same case.

    Tara says:

T-Mobile’s Pearl 8120 does not have 3G. Infact T-Mobile is slower that AT&T in adopting 3G. I have been looking for 3G and wifi in a blackberry. Even t-mobil’s 8320 does not have 3G. It is standard EDGE/GSM.
