If I’m OK using an OQO full time, will I be OK using the Shift full time? I use an OQO 01+ full time and with the use of a traditonal monitor, have had no problems. I’m concerned with several comments that this can’t replace a regular laptop.

everything about this machine is genius…i had it in my hand today with the cash….what stopped me from buying this beauty?….. it cant make calls….. will there be a software available 2 make calls via bluetooth or some kind of upgrade or extra device to help make calls?

What would happen if I create or edit and appointment in snapviue and then open outlook in vista mode? would these changes be available in vista

I purchased Shift, most of the review is accurate.

One issue that you did not discuss was 0 wifi capabilities when using Snapview (this means you need SIM cards for every country you travel, since the Qualcomm processor in the Shift has wifi and GPS capabilities, I cannot understand why HTC does not enable unless carrier say no. My device was unlocked and would like wifi when using Snapview). The other issue is battery, has anyone been able to find an external battery that has the correct connector for Shift.

HTC tech support is not aware of the type on connector.

I have seen some Shift batteries on eBay, the picture of the one on Expansys looks like HTC Advantage battery which is completely different.

It would be nice for someone to make a higher capacity replacement battery and charging stand!!!!!

This is the first device over which I’ve been excited in some time. It has the potential to change my life- not because it’s some killer machine which is so much greater than the others already out there (given the choice, I’d take ten different feature sets from ten different machines…), but rather because it has the right emphasis in the areas which are important to me.
I’m one of those who, because of job requirements, is always connected. Drives me insane. I’ve had too many Saturdays ruined because I took a blackberry rather than a laptop more than walking distance away from the house.
I don’t need to edit 50k spread sheets, but I do need to rdp around between machines triaging, catching stats, or checking securities. I don’t want to carry it in my pocket, but i do want to leave it under the front seat of the car incase the blackberry starts exploding with emergency emails.
here’s to hope. l’ll know on Monday…

I would strongly suggest before anyone buys one of these to give it a good try out, you may be very disappointed. Bought one four weeks ago will be up for sale very soon, I don’t have the patience. Don’t even consider this to be a laptop replacement…

I am on the point of buying this machine . Al my work is via outlook in vista an the outlook file is about 2 Gi.
I want to know if the outlook in snapview is the same outlook as in Vista when you switch or is it like with a windows mobile device where you must sync first mobile outlook with the vista outlook?
Anyone can tell?
Actually I have also the mobile phone HTC 730 because I use skyp a lot while travelling but quality is not so good due to the 400Hz processor. With the shift I will be actually again at 400Hz in snapview… anynone tried to make skype calls in snapview with the 3G data card?

I see no reason using Vista instead of XP on such devices. On PCs, DX10 makes sense due to powerful GPUs. They should offer a choice. Vista puts on knees any UMPC regarding speed and response time. Producers bet on wrong OS.

I have been waiting for the shift for sometime, but am concerned that HTC have not addressed the battery life problems, phone connectivity or keyboard visibility in low light, when these problems have been highlighted to them for sometime. I am just wondering whether the new Advantage would be a better buy given price and mobility benefits such as battery etc. 6 months ago or a year ago this had my serious attention, but I would have to wonder whether the competition are about to release something better having seen the hype for the Shift over the past 12 months. What would be your preferred option for a device to handle document editing, emails, internet, on the road?

The shift seems pretty good though the solid hdd could be a problem if it gets damaged due to travelling by bus in a city with bumpy roads such as Buenos Aires, where I live. I have already damaged one pristine new PC hdd going back home from the PC hardware store.

Good review, but just one little thing.
Under “Cons”, “Random quirks”, the line “they’ll be a pop up in Vista” change “they’ll” to “there will”. Other than that good job.

Like I said before, this is the dream machine. It will not replace your main PC but it could posibly compete with your notebook.

Mike Linhardt: I have been playing with the OQO model 01 and have been considering the OQO 02 or the Shift. The backlight on the keyboard is a nice feature on the OQO 02 but for me the Shift wins with its ability to run Windows Mobile for hours and hours, it’s standard power connector (ability to use universal chargers) and the larger keyboard. Another thing to consider is the passive digitizer (Shift) vs. active digitizer (OQO). For good handwriting usage or precise drawing, an active digitizer is a must but the small screen of the OQO makes it less than ideal for that purpose. Being able to touch the screen with a finger on the Shift is nice for Origami style programs but it lacks the precision of an active digitizer, so it’s not great for drawing or writing but it would work. I think the OQO should have been passive and the Shift active or better yet both active and passive like Lenovo has done with the X61. Good luck!

I having the hardest time making a decision between the Shift and the OQO model 2. I am looking to use this for business travel (I’m a roadwarrior) as a laptop replacement while I am traveling. At home, I would use my work laptop. I love the weight, and smaller size of the model 2, but I wonder if its too small. I know that sounds weird, but I do a lot work in Airplane lounges, and a full keyboard would be nice. Can you give me your advice for which one you think I should buy? Thanks! Loved the review.
