T-Mobile launches HotSpot@Home Talk Forever, includes landline phones

T-Mobile’s trying to build on the success of their Wi-Fi calling UMA service, Hotspot@Home, by launching a similar service for landline phones. It’s called Talk Forever (yes, we’ve been hearing about this for ages), it allows unlimited domestic landline calling, but it does require a new Hotspot@Home router. You won’t be able to use one of your existing ones like you can do now with your mobile phone. Talk Forever also requires a $10/month plan added to your T-Mobile account. We’ve heard the new routers will offer two SIM card slots which would allow you to make your landline and mobile calls from one phone, though that’s not confirmed. Only downside? It’s only available in Seattle and Dallas for now.

you CANNOT swap sim cards. I have heard this will mess you bill up big time. and the two slots would allow the same as 2 landlines (for business or such) for a helluva lot cheaper.

But why??? It’s a cool idea just, why?

Why would this be regionally limited if all you need is a router?

the real question is why not. Save more money with t-mobile has always been thier Motto. If this package is True Rock on T-mobile

nope. 10$ thats it. you buy router and pay 10$ for a home phone. its as simple as that. nationwide home phone. here’s the cool part, if you add the home line as an add-on to a fam plan than you JUST pay 10$, not 10$ plus the 10$ add-on fee…no double billing! and to asnwer your questions as to “why not?” to keep it simple, the home service doesnt have buckets for GSM calls so all of those calls could be overage or something and vice versa.spend the extra 10$ and just get a separate line for the home phone you cheap bastards.

why stop with vonage
down with At&T And Verizon.

Guess since I started the down with Vontage crazei should explain why I didn’t include att or verizon in my chant. I want to see Tmobile kick as much as the next guy but T-mobile is not yet ready to take down att or verizion. Yeah we will hurt their landline business. Realistictly once this service roles out nation wide Verizion and Att will still be around with take a lot more to stop those two gaints but I predict within 5 years Vontage will be no longer in business. This might be a bold statment but the reason why Vontage and other VOIP are so popular is not real for sound quality but for realy cheap calls. With the price T-mobiles is offering why would anyone continue using Vontage or standard Voip?

We signed up for it last week (we are in the Seattle area).
It works just as advertised. The only shortcoming is the inabilty to send fax or data, unlike Vonage, which can.
They do mention this on their FAQ page.
As a result, we can no longer get TiVo updates.
Other than that, it’s great.

To Timbo: I’m not a Tivo user, but I was wondering how it gets the updates (via phone line or via Ethernet)? I’d also like to ask the question, since none of the T-Mobile reps seem to know much about the technology as of right now, is it possible to make unlimited WiFi calling with the current handsets such as the BB Curve AND still have unlimited home phone service for the $10 price tag? I am currently a HotSpot@Home user for the $10 price tag and before I switch it over to Talk Forever, I wanted to be assured that both services will work simultaneously.
For those that originally thought T-Mobile was crazy for going with UMA, you can now see the overall big picture in which T-Mobile is going to be a major competitor because their prices are superb in comparison to other companies for both Mobile and soon “Landline” services.
To Ghengis: Even if the unlimited service turns out to be $20, which it wont be, its still cheaper than paying the new $99.99/month advertised price of the other major competitors for unlimited mobile services. I have a $39.99/month, 1000 minutes/free N&W + $10/unlimited WiFi, which is currently 1/2 theh price of everyone else. When Talk forever gets to my city, i’ll still have the same bill by only switching the HotSpot@Home to Talk Forever and still come out WAY cheaper. Think long term, not a one-time setup fee.

its only $10 for the actual line of service, not $10 + $10…AND T-mobile has sent out vouchers to numerous customers for a free router

We were looking into this vs going back to Verison for our land line. We have TMobile cell, but am not sure about the land line offer. Is it a less hassle than Verison? We hate Verison but want a land line again. Any input would be appreciated.

to jdh- Your call quality is only as good as you connection.
T-mobile is falling short in the game-instead of building their network and filling in dead zones they decide to roll out an obsolete idea and push it as a new one. To make matters worest they cant even provide the same features as other voip can. No fax services over @home service?! are you serious. Free Nation wide long distance?! yea right - what about unlimited calls world wide.
There are many other viop that are actually cheaper for the year and dont require you to commite to a contract. and what happens when you cancel? 200 dollar cancelation fee??!!!! for what? why should they collect a cancelation fee. i understand that when you buy a fone its discounted therefore you sign a contract to commit. but why am i signning a contract wit a home fone? what T-Mobile gave me that requires me to stay for 2 years?
I have friends who work for t-mobile and they are telling me they are force to sell this- FORCED!!! I understand that its retail but a customer shouldnt be forced into buying an item and an employee shouldnt be punished for a customer not wanting it.
This service is a sham and its rediculas that anyone is giving attention to it. - do your research guys there are actually way better services then this!!
