Blackberry email goes down…again

This is getting a little bit ridiculous, folks. We here at BGR have trouble putting our Blackberries down. Seriously. It’s a problem. That said, we’re getting a little bit frustrated with RIM following the 3rd service interruption in 9 months, and the second in a week. It’s poor form. Following the notorious blackout last year, RIM promised that it would never happen again. Hollow promises, as around 80% of all Berry devices in the continental US have been affected by a service outage that began around 3 am this morning. No carrier has been spared, with reports of crippled devices from Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Nextel, and Sprint. It seems that some users are finally getting back up online, but there’s been no official word from RIM regarding a projected time of resolution. Forgive us, but we’re beginning to question the reliability of our beloved BlackBerries. So sad, they’ve turned into Sidekicks.

There is a difference between BES and BIS. The outtage is for BIS. ie…those without a company Blackberry Server.

So, here’s my question: Let’s say that hypothetically I wanted to dump my crackberry in favor of a WinMo device. What services on WinMo will most closely replicate what I have now (BIS with 3 email accounts). I have no desire to have an “always on” computer, and do not use Outlook for mail. Everything is stored on the web servers.

Verizon in Central NY - service issues.
Email - send seems fine, receive not happening at all for a few hours. Things are building up in gmail’s inbox but not pushing to the device.

Web - works but slow (sometimes displays 1x instead of EV. The whole city is EV, and I haven’t left home yet today so it’s not like I’m going out of coverage area).

Now imagine if “terrorists” targeted Blackberry…

It’s silly to have so much important information infrastructure isolated into this single point of failure.

I am reading alot of responses centering around gmail, which I am assuming that consumer folks are hooked on BB also. Can someone share with me why a regular consumer would want push email. What’s the killer app? Isn’t text messaging enough?

    +1 Windows Mobile

RIM, watch out, I have clients who are reconsidering BB service now…

I have my company e-mail on BIS, not BES. Same with my yahoo. My Company e-mail and gmail work fine, my yahoo has a huge lag. Basically service is normal, and has always been normal in the Seattle Area.

I also suggest you guys doing a cold reboot. When you do this you reset your blackberry.

Cold Reboot: (power off, take battery out, wait 30 seconds, then put battery back in and power on).

Usually your service will be back to normal.
