Sprint Launches Samsung Ace CDMA / GSM Smartphone

Samsung has had good success with the Blackjack series, and now the Ace is making an appearance via Sprint. We do enjoy seeing new ultra-thin smartphones out of Samsung but it should be careful with the somewhat limited branding now being toyed with. Of course anything is better than referring to a handset as "SPH-blahblah" but we’ll tell you right now that you’re not going to catch us walking around with a "Samsung Queen" or a "Samsung Gin Rummy". The Samsung Ace however, is sure to make some Sprint customers pretty happy. The specs are nothing to write home about; Windows Mobile 6, 2.3" 65k color QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD support, Sprint TV support, etc. The Ace’s selling point is its dual compatibility with Sprint’s CDMA networks and the GSM networks of most of the rest of the world. Of course the GSM frequencies are limited to 900/1800MHz to avoid most GSM coverage in the US, but Sprint customers will find a good amount of roaming coverage in most major regions. Samsung’s Ace is by no means the first handset to feature dual-network compatibility but with some good marketing Sprint could play up its capabilities nicely. Users without the need for international roaming on the other hand, will likely pass on the Ace due to a price tag that is a few pay grades above its specs; $200 after mail-in rebate with a 2-year contract.

Still the ugliest BlackJack wannabe Samsung’s ever made, and go figure Sprint would put it out.

Oh that’s great! I can’t wait to get my hands on this and dump my Treo 755p. I always loved the first Blackjack on AT&T, and being on Sprint, never thought I’d see the day. Even yesterday was telling my girlfriend how much I wish I had the Blackjack only on CDMA…hehe…she got the Blackjack II and loves it…but the black one doesn’t have the grippy finish like this one appears to have. Perfect world for me.

I just ordered this phone, after spending an hour in the store with it. CDMA for here in the US, GSM for most of the rest of the word, all for under 200 dollars.
