BlackBerry 9000 to introduce OS 4.6.0?

If the evidence we’re seeing now is correct, the upcoming BlackBerry 9000 will launch with OS 4.6.0. This was previously hinted to be launching with OS 4.3.2, however that version will suffer the similar fate of rebranding like its predecessor, which was recently changed to version 4.5.0.

OS 4.6.0 has un-officially graduated from internal development at RIM and has been moved on into the official builds and carrier certification process. This same process started for OS 4.3.1 in the September / October 2007 time frame and we’ve yet to see an announcement of availability from RIM or any carrier. It has been widely reported in forums that the successor BlackBerry - model number 9000 for those who are still spreading rumors otherwise - was plagued with battery drain issues due to the inclusion of Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G, much to the shared chagrin of every other vendor who can’t seem to perfect this flaw with 3G devices. The good news is that the introduction of the carrier certification process may indicate the remote possibility that a workaround and/or resolution has been implemented for the new does-it-all device.

Only time can tell, but here’s hoping that carrier certification of the BlackBerry 9000 does not take as long as it has for the long-delayed OS 4.3.1 (err, 4.5.0).

This is great news, however it would be even better news if RIM would release OS 4.5 for those who are still waiting or are we going to get screwed over and told to buy the next generation device instead.

This is a good example for the need of Dual core Asymmetrical CPU in smart phones. It would boost performance and boost battery life.

@ppcmd, OS 4.5.0 is in very late-stage carrier certification. It’s had issues with losing network signal, battery life, random or situational crashes, etc. It’s at a feature-stop point, so they’re focused on near-weekly bug fix updates. I would expect to see something within the next 8 weeks.

    4.5, 4.6 who cares!

If they don’t fix their browser so it works like a browser should, then it doesn’t matter what the OS rev is.

mike@rim, if you are listening… the NEW killer app for mobiles is browsing, and that poor excuse of a browser on blackberry is NOT the killer app… my suggestion to mike@rim, go buy a few iPhones, or nokia n95’s and give them to your developers to copy.

I agree totally on the browser issue in the blackberrys. Ive been a heavy bb user going on 6 years and dont understand why the browser cant be up to par with other phones that are half the phone the bb is. And whats up with the release of the new software update? Back in nov we were hearing about it and its almost March and still nothing.

@Jibi thanks for the info. I jumped from the WInMobile world and honestly I don’t want to be in the same crap where the only way to get the OS update is either wait until after the new phones hit +6 - 12 months or get a new phone.

This is my first BB and while I enjoy the function, the form is something else at times.

For those complaining about a browser, go grab opera mini for your blackberry - works just like apple’s safari for iphone.

I would also know of a possible release date for the 9000. I mean are we talking before summer or late 2008. Because if late I might spend the money on the 8820.

I want my text messages tp be sorted by name (one instance per entry), bold when new, all messages contained within the [name (or number for non-addressed)]… and deleted by scrolling while holding shift to select by text within the entry … blue for sender, red for me, as it is in IM or Palm. Its just too logical and speedy a layout to not somewhat copy.

Let’s skip the browser chit chat, this is an enterprise email focused phone. If you want a pretty browser, go buy an iPhone! If you want a phone that you can work with get a BB. The only thing I am interested in is WHEN WILL IT HIT THE MARKET? I need a phone soon, my 8700 is near its death…

All this conversation deos not matter as we are not going to be seeing a new OS anytime soon. I bet the only new OS we will get will be on a new device later this summer.

So tired of hearing about new OS we will never see.

Give me a full screen blackberry with a slide keyboard, a 2.0 or better camera, and enable me to view/edit word, excel, and powerpoint and i do not care about GPS, browsers, windows mobile or the UMPC concept.

let blackberry do the best hardware and i can live with opera mini, skyfire, etc. browsers

come on 9000 and 4.6 - i need my word, excel, powepoint documents viewed and edited and then goodbye UMPC, and subnotebook, etc.

    LET’s GO PEOPLE!!!

Does this mean that since the Blackberry Bold is launching for ATT this July, that the 4.6 Update would be available to everyone by then? OR until it launches with all four major carries??? Which is ten yrs from now…
