Nokia E71 Pops up Down Under

It looks like Nokia tried to pull a fast one on us. While everyone’s heads were turned towards Barcelona for Mobile World Congress, Nokia held a showcase event in Sydney Australia where a sneaky new pic of the upcoming E71 was displayed. The pic showed the E71 next to the E61i that it will replace once released. Those in attendance report that the E71 is indeed significantly smaller than its predecessor, in fact early reports are that Nokia’s sexy new Eseries handset will be a mere 57mm and 10mm thick! Other specs floating around include HSDPA, WiFi, microSDHC support,  3.2 megapixel camera and integrated GPS. As sleek as the E71 is shaping up to be, it looks like we’re going to be unpleasantly surprised when battery size details are announced. The beefy battery on the ultra-slim E61i was certainly one of its most admirable features. Expect to see an official announcement with plenty more details at this year’s CeBIT. Oh by the way, did we mention our sources tell us that a US (AT&T) 3G / HSDPA version is 100% confirmed?

    sweet an at&t version, probably wont have wifi on it. i dont know why they have such a problem with letting there customers have wifi devices, and yes the tilt, 8525, and 8125 and iphone have it but im a smart consumer i want an in-expensive wifi device, tmobile understands that why cant at&t

    What are the chances of seeing this with T-Mo branding?

    I hope that photo’s a fake - it looks just like a photoshopped E61i! Look at the screen resolution - thats totally wrong. The photos of a ‘real’ E71 that were doing the rounds a month or so back looked a lot nicer with E51-style looks. It had a round power button and a ‘home’ button like the E51.

    Hopefully the battery is as good as the E61i’s. If it is, I’ll be getting one!

    @BigBlackBlackjack It has 802.11b/g - AT&T 3G / HSDPA compatibility, not branding.

    @Steve Slim to none unfortunately, since it’ll sport AT&T high-speed network compatibility as opposed to T-Mo.

    @Bratan: Yeah, that’s the first thing I thought when I saw the BGR pic above - it’s just a carbon black E61i. The leaked E71 withe the metal surround that you linked to is much nicer.

    I just bought a N95 8GB, missing the QWERTY goodness of the E series…

    Just found the origins of the photo above. It’s a Photoshop.

    The one and only downside I see is that it says E71 instead of N71. Then again, the N71 was built a while ago…wasn’t it?

    I agree that AT&T doesn’t like to have wifi on it’s devices, but perhaps the iphone has taught it that wifi does not stop 3G data plans uptake.

    I had my hands on one of these this evening. Quite cool. Interestingly, the screen said 3.5G not 3G. Not sure about that. It definitely looked cool.
