Leak: Verizon’s LG Chocolate and enV Replacements
LG’s Chocolate and enV have had good runs with Verizon Wireless, but by Spring of this year it looks like both handsets will be pushed aside like Jennifer Aniston. It was fun while it lasted but just like Pitt, Verizon is moving on to bigger and better things. The VX9100 (pictured left) is a sleek clamshell with a qwerty keyboard inside the flip and what looks to be a chromed surround reminiscent of… well, you know. Known details includes a slimmer profile, simpler up / down keys to replace the outer d-pad, 2 megapixel camera and a microSD slot. The VX8610 (pictured right) will replace the current Chocolate and sports the same slider form factor. One of the more interesting features of the VX8610 is that the rear of the device contains a built-in removable bluetooth headset. Visually, it does provide a bit of an eyesore but the concept is quite unique and convenient. Street names for the devices are still unknown as are pricing details, but we should see them both in stores by the end of Q2.

looks like the venus and voyager why would LG and VZW release such similar phones ? eh, let’s get some smartphones/ppc’s VZ

These are mid-range phones. The Voyager and Venus are top-tier phones.

I don’t get why the VX8610 would replace the current Chocolate, VX8550. IIRC, isn’t the VX8550 fairly new? Also, the VX8550 is MUCH sleeker than the VX8610 will ever be. VX8610 looks like a cheap Chinese knockoff of the current Chocolate. I don’t think that it will replace the Chocolate, but hey, who knows.

That’s actually not the chocolate replacement. Chocolate 3 is coming Q3 ‘08.

Those are ugly as hell!!! But then again, so are most of verizon’s phones.

All Sqube wants is a non-smartphone that has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Why is that so hard to do?

Correct, I don’t think the VX8610 is a “true” Chocolate replacement–the Chocolate replacement I’ve seen looks very different (but device appearance can change often before release). Also, I don’t think Verizon would include a mono BT headset for a music-focused phone–that would just seem odd.

Ugly? Compared to the original enV? I can tell you from firsthand experience, having held the vx9100, that it is *NOT* ugly, is pretty slick, and that the size and form-factor are the best thing about the device. Not everyone needs a bulky Voyager. This new enV serves the needs of those who want a fashion phone AND a qwerty keyboard!
