HTC fails to deliver the Shift yet again

You might have read about the HTC Shift finally being available "immediately" on Orange UK and Movistar in Spain a couple days ago. Guess what? It isn’t. Not in stock, not available for order, not in stores, not in anyone’s hands — nothing. I’ve dreamt about the HTC Shift since I saw the first photo of it, and sometimes you just wait for something you really want. Not anymore. I’m done. Completely finished with this total crap. I know that’s harsh, I do. But you don’t announce, re-announce, then announce and announce availability again and again, over and over. That’s not what a high class company does. That’s what a no-name sleazy company who has nothing but vaporware does to try and lure in people. So that’s it. No more Shift for me. I just have to admit to myself that it would have sucked anyway. Crap specs for a now-2008 device and extremely overpriced. HTC won’t sell any of these either. Why? Because of what I just said; crap specs, and a price 3x what it should be. So the question for the readers is, what would you get instead of the Shift now? I’m open to suggestions and cost doesn’t matter.

Well as an alternative, I really do like my Asus EEE PC. You’re back in to ‘crap specs’ territory, but at least it’s cheap.
I got the 1G RAM/8G SSD model for $500 and threw Windows XP on it. I absolutely love it. And with the Cirago bluetooth http://www.gideontech.com/content/articles/371/1 access to the internet through my phone via Bluetooth PAN is a just too easy.
The EEE PC isn’t perfect, and hopefully soon there will even be some as-good or better alternatives.
But it’s inexpensive, runs XP very well (with 1G RAM), and really does work out to be just about perfect for an ultra portable.
Not nearly as cool as the Shift should have been.

after 90 days to fix my TYTN II, never any HTC (High Tech Crap) again. I like my OQO m2, much better than the Shift(y).

Personally, I’d just get an OQO 02 with XP the 120GB and 2GB of RAM.
Why would HTC do this?
It sounds like something att would do but not HTC.

There is a company out there that will turn your MacBook into a tablet. You also have the option of buying the complete MacBook Tablet directly from them… The name of the company I cannot remember… This design lets you keep your optical drive & camera also.

could not agree more!!! I got the 4gb galaxy black eeepc modded with internal bluetooth and a 16gb usb flash drive. I tether this to my Tytn II and am more than happy with my ultra portable with XP instead of the shitty Vista.
I couldn’t have been more excited about the prospect of the HTC shift, I have always been an HTC fan, and frankly with the impending release of the Xperia, this laptop can go fuck itself.

The picture you show on the Shift of the homeless person is worth a thousand words and overshadows the petty debate about the item. There are over 12,000 people in New Orleans sleeping under bridges do to the current Bush regime. I say get out there and vote so we can finally be rid of the Bush/Mccain infantile mentality.

More like get rid of the leaders in new orleans and Louisiana. Who the hell is letting them live like that? Come on, get real. Your rant is more stupid than the BG shift.

The Shift does not appear to be worth the premium compared to the Eee PC. I have yet to see anyone explain the value of the multiple operating modes; I suspect most folks will only use the Windows mode, and the extra mode is just adding cost and complexity. I understand the Windoze XP version of the Eee PC will hit the states soon. I will be buying one.

I still have my shift on order but agree that this thing is long overdue to be released. I doubt we will ever get a reason from HTC as to why all the delays. I wouldn’t be suprised if they were trying to get some carriers to sign on before a general release. Most corporate accounts will only purchase devices if a carrier supports it. Getting a device with a carrier is where the big bucks are.

I agree with you all the way brother! The HTC shift was the only UMPC that I was waiting to purchase but gave up on them and purchased a regular notebook. I still think that technology is still a couple of years away from being a real benefit to anyone anyway.

@Troy - I live in New Orleans - I am on the board of a homeless shelter in New Orleans - there are not 12,000 people sleeping under bridges in New Orleans. There are about 130 - not because of anything Bush has done, but because they refuse to accept shelter.

@dondgc Sorry, but you are just a downright liar, just like the Bush gang. There are over 11,000 homeless in New Orleans, much of whom are living under bridges. CHeckout CNN. THey show tents under the bridges that stretch as far as the eye can see. These people have been trying to access the emergency funds but your government has held on to it for some unknown reason.
