T-Mobile to have 3G by Summer, Android handset by end of 2008
Alright, so this is probably a bit too little, too late, but T-Mobile has just let slip their plans for the oft-rumored American 3G data network. According to comments made by CEO Hamid Akhavan, the company plans to roll out their 3G network in the States by sometime this Summer. There have been a significant number of delays, as the network was originally supposed to deploy in 2007, but Akhavan seems confident that the network will be quite "robust" when it launches in major metropolitan areas. The CEO also claimed that it will be "the best 3G network in the country," though we’ll certainly reserve judgement on that front until it actually arrives. It’s good news, but we can’t help but think the impending 4G network launches from certain other carriers might render this deployment DOA. In other news, T-Mobile has also confirmed that they will be offering an Android-based handset by the end of 2008. There’s no word on what the actual hardware will look like, but we suppose vaguely good news is better than no news, right?
I’ve tried Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. TMO has had the best voice quality. It would be awesome if their 3G was any good.
I read an article about taking Edge to 3G speeds. Wouldn’t that be cool if all of TMO’s network was 3G overnight.

They are building quite a buzz! With the XPERIA, more 3G rumors, and a spiffy new coporate store in Philadelphia (right across from DIESEL and PUMA, next to Lacoste and near Tiffany’s) I think we can expect great things from T-Mo in 2008. I like to hear bold statements like this one from executives, gets the whole company and user community pumped up for what’s to come. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
Why do I care well maybe because its a web post and its my opinion that I can give and to that not to mention I was with t-mobile and it was the worst experiance I ever had with a carrier and to the jackass so worred about my grammer get a life I’m not at work or school last time I checked so I could care less

I will believe it when I see it as far as the network goes. As far as the android phone on t-mo I gotta call bullsh!t on that. Oh and 9th Wonder already as the title of dream merchant. Quit sellin us dreams..

“GTIwhat!” you suck (except for the GTI part, that is cool). Sprint is a thief! Twice I went with them, and twice they screwed me massively on my bill, and had the collection agencies on my ass. I don’t like paying huge bills for services I never asked for and to customer services that cares more about your credit card number than making you a satisfied customer. Any Sprint rep out there? You guys screwed me over twice, and owe me $500. I was a loyal customer for 5 years. I hope you file for Chapter 11 sooner than later.
Right on guys/gals about Tmo getting with it…I am still nursing my Treo 600 along until new smartphones please!…I would even go with a Centro until WinMo gets in self sorted and leave my beloved Palm behind (a business user)…I am hoping for awe-inpiring new handsets with 3g as web-browsing for me now is a joke (use data for email)I will never return to AT&T and Verizon too pricey…love Tmo customer service in regards to my business phone and government snooping…well, again right on to Tmo…
T-Mobile is the most reliable carrier (except coverage, need to make TONS of jobs to get it done) I known so far, that I’d like to see T-Mobile surpasses S/N and become #3
It’s about freaking time for my getting a buggy t619 to pay off.
All carrier use the same towers for the most part.(You can see multi level towers on the side of the road.) I have read the equipment specs that TMO will be using for 3G and there is a road map to 4G.From what I have seen all they would have to add is transport capacity (T-1, fiber optic) This means that as the data demand grows with TMO they can increase speeds with no equipment to change.
Im sorry for all those people who think T-mobile has good serice. Yes they do have good customer service and great service in the city. But where T-mobile fails is outside the cities, if you think about driving in a rural area your phone does not work. Im from Louisiana where t-mobile is a joke. Its all about verizon and alltel. Even here in the outskirts of Houston Tmobile has problems. Its a little to late for 3g and there using 1700 band which no one else use in the states. So no roaming on ATT. Really dumb move
Yes its nice that they TMO will roll out UMTS let get is straight, not Hsdpa, and yes on a totally separate network with a handful of phones, and yes it will be faster then most tmo subscribers are use to, but lets be real it is what is. It not to be compared with any of the companies data service’s. It will just be a cheaper alternative to the other guys and be limited to t-mobile spectrum. So if you have great coverage with t-mobile in your area of country and you want the cheapest data plans available sign up. How fast do you need to go on your flip phone. Can you tell the difference between speeds on ev-do and umts on a small flip phone.
does this mean when the sony ericsson x1 is released we will be able to use on tmo 3g network,according to http://www.xperia.com the device will run on 1700 umts, sounds good to me, i live in texas i have great coverage here, suckers tmo will prob launch the service like in 70% of their coverage to start.
I meant all carriers (AT&T, Verizon,Sprint “others”) use the same towers and hence have virtually the same coverage in most places. I think you will find that eventually TMO will have the fastest network for DATA. The equipment they have purchased is 3 generations ahead of any other UMTS company. These sites have the capability to handle an OC3 (155mbs). No company can match that now. TMO has definitely invested in the future.

too late already switched to verizon. i mean seriously, how long can someone wait in order to surf the internet wirelessly at high speeds from their phone?
ok x tmobile your an idiot i just switched to t-mobile last may from 2 years of verizon they have horible phones they charged my family 450 plus dollars a month!!!! and they have bad service over all
T-Mobile is great without 3G. Internet speeds is the last thing on the majority of the customers minds. First they want a durable phone that will last with great service. Okay that virtually eliminates Verizon in itself. I would say overall with customer service and phone service T-Mobile would definitely come first, next AT&T and lastly Sprint/Nextel.
I work for T Mobile as a retail sales rep, and i can say that the above article is true. We had a HUGE regional meeting about two months ago in regards to us going 3G by around August, maybe earlier. We also discussed Android, and that we are supposed to be launching a phone by November that will indeed have that software on it.
All I have to say for ourselves (Tmobile) is… Seven JD Power & Accociates awards in a row and still going strong… Eat your hearts out Next-can’t-tel where this charges came from, Ver-I can’t get my phone to work-zon and A-shoe box with my bill every month-TT/Cingular.
