Bigger PlayStation 3 on the Way as 80GB Bleeds Out
It looks like the rumors were true and the 80GB PlayStation 3 is in fact going the way of the dinosaur. As retailers try to dump their remaining inventory, news that the more spacious PlayStation 3 model is on its way out was only heartbreaking for a few days. The move is now making a lot more sense of course, when considering the latest rumor to emerge from the gaming world. It appears that Sony has ditched the 80GB model because there will soon be a new sheriff in town. A meatier model is reported to be just over the horizon, boasting 120GB - 160GB of storage. Further details are still trickling in, but it’s said that the newcomer will ship with the highly-coveted Dual Shock 3 controller, which isn’t widely available outside of Japan at this point. The best news, which of course is the worst news for those who have already shelled out the cash for the 80GB model, is that the new model will come in at the same price point that its predecessor sold for. Nice! Word on the street is that the 40GB model should receive a 20% price slash around the same time. That brings the 40GB down to a svelte $299 and twice the price will bring you three to four times the storage with the upcoming model ringing in at $499.

Any idea when Sony plans to launch the new unit? I just bought the 80 GB version last week, but if the new one is going to be the same price, I am thinking about returning it and waiting for the new model.

Do u really need all that memory? What is it really good for? I want one but is the extra memory worth shelling out the extra bucks?

160 gig is for me. In the sense of all the future firmware updates that could arise from it. On top of possible game downloads and music or movies. I bought a 60 gig but if this does come out I am upgrading.

Meh. I’m still going to CraigsList and picking up the 60 gig version. If I need more space, I can replace the hard drive myself. In the meantime, I’d like to make sure that I can play whatever PS2 game I decide to pick up for nostalgia’s sake.
That said… the “not enough games” and “it’s too expensive” argument’s aren’t really quite as valid if the SKUs are $299 and $499. Sony has done plenty of stuff wrong, but to parrot the things they used to do wrong and have subsequently fixed is as stupid as saying that MS still has 30% failure on 360s due to RRoDs. That used to be the case, it isn’t anymore. If you’re going to be a fanboy, the least you could do is make sure that your snarky complaints and poorly-veiled flamebait is mildly accurate.

This is great gt5 prologue in april, more gigs are around the corner. I play fifa a lot on my friends ps3, so I think this will be a good investment. Plus a blu ray player.

If its true that the 40 will get a price cut, that’s will help them a lot. 299 means its only 50 dollars more then the Wii. This should help sales. Nintendo bet start popping out some more wii if they want to stay at the top. Just wondering, how much does the xbox go for because I have no clue.

I got my xbox360 arcade for 259. No hard drive just a memory card. I have no use for a hard drive even with live.

When they ever get around to launching their movie download service, plus game like warhawk and the eventual Socom release, their will be a reason to have more space.. But really, who knows when they will have their download service? I am more interested in a pearl white version…

Like the guy said above. if you need more HDD spae just upgrade yourself. Its the easiest thing. It would take you 3 minutes. The only diff between the 40 and 80, that you can’t fix, is the Backward compatibility, But who wants to play a PS2 game in 2008.

Yup, it’s possible to upgrade your ps3 hard drive, and quite easy. You can find out how to do it anywhere online. Go to game sites like Gamsepot, or any of the game blogs like Joystiq, etc. and do a search on Ps3 hard drive upgrade.
