Update: BlackBerry OS 4.3.1 simply re-branded, no delays expected

We have received information from a very credible source that OS 4.3.1, mentioned in conjunction with BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1 Service Pack 5 in November’s Connecting With The Experts webinar and apparently forgotten in yesterday’s press release from RIM at Lotusphere, has actually been re-branded as OS 4.5. There will be nothing missing from this new version that is packaged with the same enhancements previously reported with OS 4.3.x, including long-awaited HTML e-mail capabilities. As initial carrier certification comes to a close, the general availability dates are still expected to fall somewhere between late February and the few months following, depending on the carrier.

This morning’s official press release made more than a few heads in the online BlackBerry community perform a double-take, as OS 4.3.1 beta releases have been highly visible in various circles since carrier certification began last October. Per our sources, due to the number of enhancements being added to the OS, it was a marketing decision to change the version number. As we’ve previously mentioned, this should be perhaps the most anticipated OS releases for end-users since the release of OS 4.0, nearly three years ago.

Mark, what was being called V4.3 by everyone, including in the beta releases, is going to be called V4.5 when it is released.

So do you need to have a BES server to get HTML email? I don’t get it.

What do you guys think native HMTL support will mean for those 3rd party apps that provide it?

No, not all 4.3 releases will be rebranded to be 4.5, can’t do that since 4.3 is already out there on 8130’s and such.
Of course, VZW will use this version change to further delay a OS upgrade for us 8830’s, I have little doubt.

Sure wish RIM would disable in 4.5 carrier being able to lock out hardware features (like GPS).

In regards to mail connector, due to the small and limited amount of subscribers who actually use it RIM has discontinued the service.

LoSo - You referred to the new Tmobile Curve as ‘8820.’ Is this a typo? Doesn’t the Curve belong to the ‘8300′ series?

    Please explain. Thanks.

Well if the T-Mo Curve is going to get GPS now would that not constitute a new number? 8300 is the bare-bones Curve, 8310 has GPS, 8320 has WiFi, so shouldn’t this be the 8330 or summat?

I enjoy deciphering (or trying to decipher) Galvatron’s posts. No big deal to me. No one has to read what he writes.
