Microsoft to bring ads, automated shopping lists to shopping carts

Think that the grocery store is safe from advertising spots and marketing ploys (ha!)? Think again, Batman. Later this year Microsoft will bring a new revolution to the traditional grocery store shopping cart system. Partnering with the Shop Rite supermarket chain, Microsoft will debut a new system that will allow customers to enter a shopping list from the comfort of their home computers. Once at the store the user can simply swipe their Shop Rite card, bringing up the previously entered list on a small screen embedded in the cart. How nice. Lest you think Microsoft and Shop Rite are looking to provide a purely selfless service, the new cart screens will be able to display advertising content as well. An embedded RFID chip will allow the cart screen to display different ad content depending on where in the store the cart is located. Sounds, well, pretty annoying. We’ll stick to Whole Foods, athankyou.

    I like Whole Foods, they have great fish. I like how most of their food is higher quality…unlike Safeway.

    Now if they can only keep the carts in their own parking lot! Technology can help with RFID in locking the wheels with perimeter control.

    This isn’t just ads and shopping lists. It’s also (and more importantly) having a running total and checking out instantly without unloading anything or dealing with a cashier. I can’t wait until this is standard everywhere, including Whole Foods.
