Apple intros new MacBook Air

Have you been holding off on purchasing that new Apple laptop to wait and see what Steve pulled out of his hat at Macworld? You won’t be disappointed. Apple today introduced an ultra-light version of their popular MacBook laptop. Dubbed the MacBook Air, the new computer is being billed as "the world’s thinnest laptop." Based on the images coming out of the Keynote, we’d have to agree with that claim. The little bugger is 0.16-0.76 inches thick, depending on where you take the measurement. It sports a full size 13.3" display, multi-touch gesture track pad, full-size back lit keyboard, integrated iSight, 1.6GHz / 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo chip, 2GB of RAM, 80GB 1.8" hard drive (64 GB SSD optional), and built-in 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. All told, this is one crazy little machine. It even fits inside a manila envelope! Expect to find this on Apple store shelves in about two weeks for $1,799…the question now is can we wait that long? Hit the jump for some more shots

An $1800 computer that you can’t watch a DVD (much less (HD/BR) and has a non-swappable battery. So it’s basically a sophisticated internet/word processing tablet. No thanks.

AT, you wanna check the prices on that SZ6?
great notebook, but different customer than the one for SZ6.

i personally think it will do well, i cannot figure out the battery issue though. I can definitely live without optical drive and i have plenty of usb hubs. not bad overall, but a very good macworld.

It’s a 2000 dollar machine with the same exact specs as the Inspiron I’m typing this on, nobody needs it and I could break it over my knee. Congrats to apple on building the next Newton. By the way, almost everything Mr. Jobs said at the keynote was a lie. I wanted to see the first stylish UMPC and all there was was a stupid ultraportable with nothing but a mediocre spec sheet that one could add to a VAIO UX themselves, and for some reason, it’s really thin. Yippie. That’ll come in handy the next time I need to air mail a laptop to china for a dollar. And they already have the thing beat there anyway, so could an apple fanboy please tell me if I missed something?

To think that the only apple product I eagerly anticipated would turn out to be a glorified motorola RAZR (please excuse my english).

They really should have interviewed on this one… if it was humanly possible to put a disk drive in there, it would be all worth it… I understand they needed the fatter part of it (am I going nuts using that word?), so they put two things on both sides, but the disk drive really IS important….unless you have a USB hub, your out of luck with the ONE port… once again I understand, and whats up with the projection jack? They could have used that for more useful things… I know I never used it once on my macbook, and it makes no sense for them to put that in there… but moving on, they charge that price, which I understand, 1800 (excuse me, 1799), because its so thin, require new processors to be made, has good memory, and plenty other reasons, but the fact of the matter is, you will end up paying more than that original price, if you want an external disk drive, thats gonna cost ya. And they dont include an apple remote by default, which is odd considering they elaborate on the business/keynote aspect of it. Thats another 20 dollars. Its amazing, dont get me wrong, its just a little weird how they assume that we all will convert to watching dvds their way and listening their way, they are really pushing it :p. But I’m an avid apple fan, and think this is a great work of art… cant wait to see it in the stores so I can believe the build.

Well i am absolutely happy, i was so worried that my gorgeous macbook was gonna be outdated a month after i bought it. Some would probably argue that it is, but it has a superior processor and 4 gigs of ram so this is like a toy next to my macbook. If i had the money to blow i would get one, but it is not worth the price tag. It is a beautiful notebook however……

I’m just going to say this once and for all and I hope that apple fanbois alike will realize that this was a really bad move on Job’s part, I mean when you watch the keynote nobody but that one guy with the glasses and pants up to his chin who has a “gamertag” of f4n8014l1f3 (fanboi4life) stands up clapping because really this is like…a Palm Folio…I’m really sorry I said that but with all the shit Jobs said for you to buy to make this work is just insane and I didn’t include a monitor or a usb hub…or four…

but according to the keynote he wants you to buy a $1799 foli…notebook, a $149 ipod nano (but we all really want the Touch but I’m not including that), another computer to siphon the optical drive from $looooooooooots or the $99 superdrive anyways, a time capsule for like $299, and then to rent movies for what’s it like $9 each and watch on your appletv that’s now lowered to a “reasonable” $229?

    The grand total comes to…:
(holy crap) $2,584+ on apple tech in one day.
without the worthless appletv it’s a meager:
    oh boy, $2,355+.

(If you were wondering what it would be with the Touch:
    w/ appletv:$2,834 for 16gb Touch
    w/o appletv:$2,605 for 16gb Touch)

I don’t know if I’m just sane or what but that is a shitload of money to spend on an ok ipod, one of the coolest yet simplest gadgets to come out of the woodworks in a while, a Folio, an optical drive (well look at that), and movie rentals since nobody really wants an appletv.

Somebody tell me if I’m in the ballpark of what you’re thinking or what but that seems to be what he said when I watched the keynote.

(Truth, I would’ve loved to see maybe an update to the iPhone and a bigger iPod Touch. That would’ve been better than this Macbook Air.)

Let’s see how the average Joe reacts when he finds out this thing doesn’t have a Lan/ethernet Port.

Disappointed. This is what they came up with? Pretty looks but missing key pieces for me personally, such as a drive and replaceble battery. Forget any stylish corporate use without the port.

I was holding out for a tablet, and thought it was quite possible they’d have a 3G version of the iPhone. Perhaps even a new updated design on the MacBook Pros with solid state drives.

    Disappointed.

IF you guys thing they won’t sell, check back when they release this quarter’s numbers. no way these things dont sell.

AT, if you have to have the ethernet then they have an adapter. personally i haven’t used ethernet in my powerbook in over a year. Same goes for optical drive. Everything is online that’s needed. no problems there.

why do people keep up with the 3G iphone? every rumor site has been saying mid-summer, even legit news sources have had that time frame.

    hate away.

Dtest54, You might have not used your ethernet in over a year, the question is if you would feel comfortable not having one at all; my guess is that you are going to say: “of course”; we will have to wait and see if the market agrees with you.

About using an adapter, the minute you do that……it means you can’t use any other usb device unless you are using a usb hub.

Again you might see no problem with all this, I personally do.

Again what I am trying to say is not that this is a “bad” machine, simply it’s not the BE ALL end ALL laptop that Apple says it is.

Same goes for the iPhone, and proof that Apple products sell mostly because of the hype machine behind them and not because of real “value”, is that the iPhone flopped quite hard here in europe and it didn’t even make it to the Asian markets. While in the USA where the Apple hype machine is insane…booom record sales.

Am I the only one that remembers that Jobs was suppose to announce iPhone sale numbers at this MacWorld and give an update on their world wide maket share goal?

    iPhone sold in germany =10k; France=30k; UK=30k
Yea I guess these were not nice numbers to share at the MacWorld….

At, i think you missed and imagined a large part of the keynote.
As usually posted, he did discuss sales numbers. They never talk about expectations because there is no need.

And Jobs never claimed this laptop as the “end all”, as I remember all he claimed was that it was the thinnest and he then aid to get it that thin they had to make some changes (ethernet port). Even the rumor sites I read before the keynote said that it would be without an optical drive and the ethernet port would be left out because it would not fit into the thin body. It is a ultra thin and light portable, its not a desktop replacement and its not an “endd all” as you say. And if you think they claimed that then please go watch again.

They are a for profit company that uses their designs to sell devices, nothing new here. If they are not for you then go buy something else.

Jeff B. I’m with you about the 32GB touch, I’ll be waiting in line as well.

Gotta love Steve Jobs… he’s the MAN when it comes to showing off outdated technology and presenting it as new.

Sony has had the SZ series for YEARS now that weighs about 3lbs and packs the same features.
