New Apple TV coming on Monday?
According to Busines Week, the answer to that question is a resounding "Yes!" We’re a bit skeptical, based almost entirely on the lukewarm reception garnered by the current generation Apple TV, but we wouldn’t place it outside the realm of possibility. There’s no word on exactly what new and / or improved features that this thing might support, but if we had to guess we’d put our money on movie rentals being available for purchase and download directly from the Apple TV set-top box. If this does, in fact, come out, it would be an attempt on Apple’s part to wage war directly with companies like TiVO and DirectTV. If you don’t already own one of the first generation devices, what would it take for Apple to bring you into their Apple TV fold?

Support for the iPhone/iPod Touch SDK being announced
Now that is HOT!
Actual DVR functionality, and storage to handle it. At least 160 gig and two tuners. Then I’d consider it.
I have an AppleTV. I view it as a souped-up iPod for my home AV system. If you have a stereo connected to your TV its a good option. My wishlist for AppleTV:
1) INTERNET RADIO. It would be great to hook into Last.fm, Pandora, or any old Internet radio stream straight from the AppleTV box and without having to use an unauthorized plugin (streamer).
2) ONLINE PHOTO ACCESS. Should be able to call up Picasaweb, Snapfish, etc.
3) DVD DRIVE. It would be nice to replace 2 boxes with one AppleTV.
Movie rentals is much farther down my list and seems more problematic than the above features (eg long download times).
I’d note for the record that when Apple first released AppleTV they promised to future-proof it with regular feature updates and this hasn’t happened yet. So I hope whatever features they add will be downloadable to existing AppleTVs and not just available on new ones.
It would need to be free and within walking distance so I wont waste my gas
I could care less about rentals. If they just included in the ability to read from an external hard drive and play divx without hacking it, I’d get one.
100% agree with Eric – Divx support and this is pretty slick. Without it, it is a totally useless brick.
HD rentals for me. I dont care to own any movies as for me its a waste of $$ and HD space.
Most of you bastards don’t know what you’re talking about. The greater part of America doesn’t know wtf DivX is. Though I think DivX is great, it ain’t gonna sell an AppleTV.
I explain why I think Apple is on the right track with Apple TV in my post entitled “Skating to where the DVD player will go” at http://www.mathoda.com/archives/168
Chances an update will be revealed on Tuesday as Engadget is posting notices of a Keynote happening on the 15th – Tuesday.
Wouldnt be surprise if there are one or two updates on the ipod lines, mostly being prices or memory/space upgrades and etc too.
It would have to be at most $99 with 320gb on board, long range WiFi, able to have DVR functionality, and come WITH the video/power cables and remote.
Jeff B. are you serious? all that for $99? never.
JL
I dont care about DVR as I have one, DVD drive? do you not get the idea of appletv? online distribution.
I hope it comes down in price just a little. Hopefully to $199.99 and also have new features such as syncing to iPhones, UMPCs, and Laptops.
Dtest,
$149 would be the highest I’d go for all that.
well for me,
If it could connect to a “3G iPhone” via a broadband connection so I can access my entire Media collection anywhere I have service (I know, kinda like a slingbox)so I dont have to give up the huge storage capacity of my iPod Classic to get an iPhone, That would make me take the plunge into Apple TV and iPhone if it also supported enterprise email.
and be south of $200 for Apple TV and $350 for iPhone
@Jeff
WTF are you smoking? Do you see anyone else selling a product with all that crap for that cheap? NO. So why do you expect Apple to do it because you’re a cheap undecided dumbass?
The AppleTV SHOULD be $99, but it can’t be if it has that much stuff. $199, maybe.
An Apple TV should have at least Tivo functionality, but of course with the ability to sync with your ipod/iphone. Anything less than that leaves it a niche device. How many people really want to PAY for all of their content? The added functionality of it being an internet appliance, allows it to: stream content from your pc; internet radio; internet tv; and with its own operating system, it could be a viable competitor to MS Windows Media Center. How about having companies create Plugs in for it or full blown programs like will be occurring for the Iphone. The original Apple TV was just the tip of the iceberg of what it should have been. A $399 price point would see it sail off shelves.
Also should be able to work with NAS and external hard drives to give it space flexibility.
BLUE RAY!!!! I know it’s never gonna happen, but if they added Blue Ray and maybe HD rentals I would definitely get one.
nimbus,
If you were aiming that comment at me, not Jeff S., then usually it’s pot but today I tried crack…so that could’ve been why.
But apple could sell it for $99, just Steve wouldn’t make as much money, and in the end that’s what it comes down to.
jeff at $99 they would be at a loss. no way they put those components into it and keep it under $99
Audio tracks get scrobbled to Last.FM
