Steffi, HSDPA is a backwards compatible evolution of UMTS. Said in different words – it is UMTS, but much faster than UMTS. At least in Europe practically all 3G UMTS operators have upgraded their network to 3.5 HSDPA speed (here in Spain 7.2 MB/s).

hmm now I’m happy I’m getting a vodaphone account…any idea where on vodaphones network it will be sold first? Hong Kong has HSDPA currently.

Of course no cdma support, its a losing market. Expect this bad boy to be hitting the tmo shelves shortly after the launch. Tmo will not fall behind att or cingular (whatever they’re going by this week). And for the insiders, tmo will be launching a touch screen phone, produced by htc, later this month.

Forgot to add, obviously a CDMA variant might not use the Tavor chipset, unless Intel is licensing EVDO from Qualcomm. If there is a CDMA variant, it’ll probably use a Qualcomm 7500/7600 chip.

So is this going to be the BlackBerry 8900? If so, then there is the potential for a CDMA variant (8930) though I haven’t seen anything on the roadmap for 1H ‘08. But this might just be a GSM one-off in the 8800 series (i.e. 8850, 8890 or something) with faster chipset and high-res screen to satiate those who want a BlackBerry with iPhone looks.

Every year is a great year for GSMers. Most phones are GSM for a good reason. SOME make it to CDMA, but MOST never see CDMA light. I seriously doubt we will see a CDMA Nokia N95 for example. There is no reason to develop it for a tiny fraction of the world.

Why would they give love to CDMA? The entire world uses GSM, and only a small percentage CDMA. Catering to CDMA first is a sure way to limit your earning potential, so why do it? They will immediately have more GSM customers … so this is what they should develop for. Love it or hate it, its a GSM world. So either get used to staying behind as a CDMA customer, or go to a GSM carrier. Thats like Linux users getting really mad because companies are making Windows versions first.

No T-Mobile USA is going to use the 1700mhz band a whole new 3G band. T-Mobile Europe in the other hand uses 2100mhz.

This is going to be huge for RIM. This is fast, will most likely hit At&t first before any other carrier globally. The other thing is the 2100 mhz, that allows you to actually use this in Japan and Korea which currently only the 8707 allows. This is going to boost their stock even further and I will be the first to try and get one!
