Verizon SMT5800 coming on the 7th online, in stores the 21st
If you’re on the big red and have been praying for another Windows Mobile device, and want something pocketable, the SMT5800 could be right up your alley. Sporting a number pad on the outside, and full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, the HTC Vox reincarnated will grace Verizon’s airwaves on January 7th. You like walking up to the cash register and bothering the crap out of the sales person? Then you’ll have to wait for it to hit stores on January 21st. 128MB ROM / 64MB RAM, microSD slot, EV-DO Rev. A upgradability, and Bluetooth 2.0 are all part of the SMT5800. What about pricing, you say? $314.99 with a 2 year, $344.99 with a 1 year, and $469.99 full retail. How does Verizon get off charging so much for their old-techonology crippled smartphones? It’s like they’re begging users to leave Verizon, even if they have to pay the $175 termination fee.
This phone is over $175 more than the Blackjack II and Curve 8310. It’s more expensive than the 8820 and the Tilt. And with far fewer features.
The VX6800 is even more expensive ($349), and $50 more than the Tilt, and without GPS and microsdhc.
The i760 is the same price as the Tilt ($299), and $200 more than the Bjack II and the Curve.
I just don’t get it anymore. Why does Verizon even make smartphones?

With prices as high as this, I don’t think consumers are willing to shell out this much. Demand will drop and VZW will start discounting their phones. Wait and see. EX: Moto Q9 music phone - this phone is ugly, crippled and expensive. Prices will drop to $99. Why do VZW make their phone so ugly. What happen to plain Black and perhaps titanium?

I’m not sure where anyone is getting off saying the phone is expensive. These are contract discounted prices only. Take $315 and subtract the standard $50-$100 online discount or mail-in rebate, the $100 advance device discount if you get a typical unlimited data plan, and if you have new every 2, that’s another $100. Bottom line, for most people this phone will be $50 or less from day one.

the i760 is touch screen so the price is expected to be more than the Blackjack II specially since it has Wi-Fi and 3G.

So you’re saying that the most expensive cell phone provider VZW will give this phone to new subscribers for $50. Where have you been? I don’t think so… look at comparables VZW phones at the mall, you will NOT find this type of phone for $50.

Size-wise it’s pretty nice for somebody making their first foray into smartphones who still wants to use the device as a phone first. But if I were looking at this segment, I’d personally hold out for the HTC Iris supposedly expected to launch relatively soon. The HTC Touch is supposedly getting VERY close as well. Just saw a rumor that it and a few accessories are now showing up in Verizon’s internal inventory system.

You can’t get this phone for free. He who said he just placed an order and got it free is lieing. The $50 mail in rebate is not valid with the $100 “advanced phone credit”. So, the phone costs $50 plus taxes which are based on the $430 retail. Total will come to about $85. I should know, I really did just order this phone about 2 hours ago. It’s still a good deal for this phone IMO.

I have had this phone for a couple of weeks. I like the phone a lot, but the battery life leaves a lot to be desired. I only get about 24 hours with light usage. I’m going to trade out the battery to see if I have a bad battery. If not, it’s going back to Vz and I’ll wait for the BB Curve (or equivalent).

Better network and overall service. AT&T and Sprint are pathetic. Wow, they have phones but their network is terrible. Which would you have?

Had t-immoble and it’s by far and a way the worst provider of the major three players, that said with a grossly inferior cell network, they obviously need to do something to generate revenue, since they’re not doing it with new subs - I live in NJ and T-immobile is horrible in NY and NJ.
I love Verizon and will make even a minor compromise over a smart phone hand held, since I cna be assured I still get the BEST cellular coverage any where, any time. Good luck.

About the SMT5800. I just ordered it as well online and got it for FREE~~ I am the main person on the bill with 3 other phones for the family. I got 100.00 towards a new phone. Plus got a Discount ONLINE for ordering thur Verizon

I ordered on line and it was free with my plan 2yr renewal. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet but looked at it in the store it seemed nice it is not a touch screen hope it works well
