iPhone firmware 1.1.3 surfaces with much needed fixes

After turning out a couple of quick releases earlier this year, Apple has been a bit slow on the iPhone firmware updates as of late. It looks like they’ve been hard at work, however, as the recently leaked 1.1.3 update seems to include a number of relatively minor, yet welcome changes. If this turns out to be legit, 1.1.3 now allows users to send SMS messages to more than 1 recipient at a time. It’s almost criminal that it has taken over 6 months to get this feature out the door, but we’re nonetheless happy to see it. Google Maps has received a couple of notable enhancements, with the new version allowing for location pinpointing by way of cell tower triangulation (pseudo GPS). Google Maps is also now able to display in hybrid mode. Lastly, the home screen has received a couple of tweaks, including the ability to re-arrange icons by dragging and dropping, support for web-bookmarks as icons, and Summer Board-style page views. That’s all for now, though we wouldn’t be shocked if they slip a couple more changes in there before the official release.

MMS? Ability to use corporate (WPA enterprise) wifi? Option to not scale down photos when posting to gallery or emailed? Less crippled bluetooth services?

Forgive me for not getting too excited over being able to re-arrange icons on the screen.

I bought a first gen ipod in 2001 for $500 and when the second gen software was being talked about I got all excited, until I learned there’d be no update for first gen ipods. So I’m basically fearing at Macworld Apple will release a next gen model and all these features that are lacking will only be available on the new models. :(

weave, no way they have a new model for macworld. not till summer. also, its a good update, if its not for you then get another phone.
Also, they still update the firmware on old ipods, not sure what your talking about, features change all the time, they won;t make 3 year old devices work the same as new ones, they are a for profit business.

Not the first gen ipods. I learned later part of it was because they had someone else write the ipod software first time around, then took it in house and rewrote it themselves, so that might be part of it. But it still frosted my yuletide nuts.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the iphone. But I also have a Nokia N95 so that makes the limitations to me more apparent and the limitations in the iphone are mostly silly and could be changed with software.

These are shit upgrades that should’ve been there when the phone was released and this should have the ability to lanscape the keyboard while texting, be able to record video, and other actually useful stuff instead of this shit.

I can’t believe there is still no mention of the ability to copy, cut, and paste and the ability to select multiple messages for deletion

Humble Blackberry?? What world or should I say state are you living in. 8/10 professionals are still using Blackberry. Maybe soccer mom/dads like the iphone because they can show it off at LA Fitness, but in the real world (NYC) you will not see many of the big players on wall street or medicine using an iphone.
If you have a clue about economics you would know the medicine is the fastest growing sector in the world economy; not big boy toys like iphone.

iphones serve a select market, but anyone who uses their phone for true business has no reason to drop BB or Palm at this point.

For us working forks, we cannot run around with our cute little white ear buds in our ears all day, we actually have to work… so we can have a humble life.

So keep the dumbass comments to yourself little man, unless you have some complex that you are not sharing.

Yeah, but Blackberry icons look like the ugly stepsister to the iPhone’s icons. Also, how’s that web page display on those things?! iPhone’s had real web display like…forever.

So you’re saying professionals make up the vast majority of cellphone users? And that their needs determines what a great phone solution is?

    Get a grip, Vinnie!

Why can’t the iPhone and Blackberry get along? They’re both great devices. And we’re all beautiful people. And we love our devices.

Um… first of all it’s way too early to tell who is going to adopt the iPhone. Granted at this point in time Black Berry has the lions share of business customers but heck the iPhone is still rather young less than a year heck barely half a year old correct? So without getting into a blanking cotest lets all of us agree to give the iPhone say a full two years to mature and see where the market takes it. I’m not a betting man as a rule but I think some of use will be surprised.

    1. if version 1.1.3 comes out, can a phone with the 1.1.2 firmware be updated?

    2. if the iphones with the 1.1.3 get the capability of using at&t’s 3g network, will the ppl with the 1.1.2 be able to use it? (assuming they cant update)

    3. is there any confirmed release date on the 1.1.3 firmware and ifnot what is the estimated release date?

    will.

    1. yes
    2. No, the hardware in the phones is not 3G capable.
    3. No, have not seen an estimated one. The video of 1.1.3 shows a few bugs still needing to be fixed before it will be released.

ps: I made the same switch and have been very happy, both are great devices.

As a long time Blackberry and Palm user who has recently bought an iPhone, I’ll just say that Blackberry is a great enterprise email device and iPhone is hands down the best smart phone. The browser capabilities are astounding, as are its iPod functions, Google Maps and YouTube.

Feature to feature, you can’t compare. They are in different worlds.
