Second, you can natively sync with MS Exchange without needing a BES add-on or wasting time logging into a sorry “lite” web mail interface with iphone. That’s a big deal for lots of corporate users who want converged devices.

Third, camera and video recording and video playback are a big deal now. Also related is gaming ability. Graphically, if you are offering those camera/video and playback features and aren’t delivering them, you get issues like the current TyTN II/Tilt owners have been experiencing, where those features are basically pointless for a $500 device.

Finally, there is the input advantage of true tactile feedback on hardware input buttons, and the fact that your screen doesn’t need to be cleaned nearly as often as a touchscreen device. Also with this point, the speed of predictive text with a T9 layout really IS faster than thumb-based QWERTY for the majority of SMSing. If you want to send long emails and you don’t know how to use T9, then I’m sure you may prefer QWERTY, but that’s a personal preference… definitely not a global standard for “fast texting” as you claim.

So really, if you want a device to use as a cheap laptop or UMPC replacement, a cheap camera replacement, a multimedia smartphone, a DS/PSP replacement with lacking controls, AND have native mobile connectivity to Exchange/Notes systems… what other device in the US market could you get?

With that Said, What Tyler is saying is that the N95 is Expensive. currently if you search well, you can get it for 560, but most of us got it for about 600. The new one will come out at 800 and trust me, it won’t be coming down in price anytime soon, just look at how long the European 8GB hovered around 7-750. So for 800 bucks you can get multiple blackberry curves. 2 Iphones. an Iphone and a video Ipod. You can get an Iphone and a Great Point and Shoot camera. YOu can get an internet Tablet and an Iphone. The camera isn’t even as great as people make it out to be. It’s no where near the quality of even a cheap 100 buck point and shot digital camera of less or equal megapixels. Phone cameras and video as well, was meant for the cheap, quick video at the spur of the moment. Things that you see for example when that Florida Kid Got Tasered at the John Kerry Speech.

In the end, I do think I have the best phone in one, but I too wonder if it was worth the price.

Also, Mark Guim, the guy behind Fonegrabber.com and Thenokiablog.com, who recently started selling the N95-3, has gotten confirmation from his supplier (official Nokia distributor, not some shady setup) that he should be able to get the handset in by mid-January.

I’d say I’m 100% confident this handset is real.

So basically, the N95 8GB is able to cram a bigger battery (1200mAh vs. 1100mAh), HSDPA, a 5MP cam with autofocus, a bigger (2.8″ vs 2.5″) more vibrant display (16 million colors vs. 65k) AND 8GB of internal flash memory into a SMALLER package. A-Freakin-mazing, but yet this phone is a non-event. Fascinating. Thanks for playing.

Obviously there is a phone out there for everyone, but what I am arguing is that this phone is the hype of the century. I don’t consider it innovation when I could tape devices that together do what the n95 does and have them be smaller than the n95. My opinion is not shared by everyone, but I am a huge fan of technology so I usually see value in cool and interesting products that come out, but I seriously cannot grasp why someone would pay this much money for a phone that is simply not that impressive. If the iphone was twice as thick and three twice as pricey, I’m sure it would be able to blow away the competition. Relatively, the n95 is a non-event because its not an advancement, its like nokia literally just glued a digital camera to a symbian handset with a fancy screen and called it a day. OK so its some great features that were pretty bleeding edge when it came out, how often do normal people use these features? Where is a bluetooth headset that doesn’t look retarted? I use google maps on my curve and it works fine, i’m not locked into at&t gps services. The n95 isn’t for everyone, your right, its just for those types of euro trash that think they have the “BEST” because they are spending the most money. I can have whatever I want and I choose no n95 because its just not that great. MY OPINION.

The N95 most certainly is NOT designed for everyone. Neither is the iPhone, and neither is the Curve, obviously. If they were, then we would own one and this conversation wouldn’t be happening.

Given that the N95 series was the first handset on the market to cram that many features into a single device, and for them to all work surprisingly well (I’ve had the original N95, the N95-3, and now the N95 8GB on my desk, so you aren’t going to argue that they don’t work) is a feat. Thus, coming in and immediately declaring this device a “non-event” is daft. It’s also the 2nd HSDPA S60 device that Nokia has produced specifically for the US market, without the support of a carrier. That alone is the “event” to quite a bit of people, even if not to you.

I certainly am not contending that the N95 8GB NAM is a Jesus phone by any measure (in fact, I’d strongly recommend against spending $800 on it). But declaring it a non-event is, again, daft.

Same feature set. The only difference would be the color and .2″ of screen. I’ve got them both sitting in front of me and I’d take the N95-3 anyday.

One thing I find pretty interesting is that Nokia actually released shots of the new N96 not too long before this little number. What will become of the N95 8GB when that comes out? And should people really buy this phone when it comes out for the price or stick with the N95-3?

1. Tigerdirect doesn’t sell mostly refurbs and leftovers. I bought my N95-3 (that’s the regular N95 with US 3G and a microSD slot, which is a MUCH better deal than the N95 8GB with uS 3G) and it was delivered sealed from the factory. No refurb there.

2. Comparing the N95 to the Curve is like comparing a RAZR V3 to the iPhone. I mean, seriously?

The whole draw of handsets such as the N95 is that I have everything that I want in ONE device. I don’t need a DSLR for pictures. I want point-and-shoot simplicity.

With the ONE device, I can take REALLY nice pictures (I’m not printing, for heaven’s sake. Most digital pics sit on Flickr or a Hard drive and maybe get emailed or something), I can take unbelievably good quality video, i can listen to my music through regular headphones, speakers, or a stereo bluetooth headset, and I get GPS so I don’t get lost, not to mention I get S60, which is by far the most user-friendly SMARTPHONE OS out there (personally I don’t classify the iPhone as a smartphone, but that definition is widely debated anyways).

And I can fit all of that in my pocket. Does your Curve do HSDPA? No? Oh, shucks, that’s too bad. Does it use GPS to tell you where you’re at? Yes? Cool, what GPS app do you use? Oh, you can only use AT&Ts? That sucks. What about watching videos? 65k colors? That’s it? damn. Camera? 2MP? Really? Wow, you know, there’s RAZRs that have a 2MP cam. Glad to know you’re special.

i paid that 800$ price for the n95 when it first came out and it was worth it and to be able to use it to its fullest capabilities in north america at the same price now… is still worth it.

Unbranded and Unlocked…who cares. Still doesn’t warrant the price.
