More Speculation on Apple’s “Newton” UMC
Note that the composite above is a very very long shot, but details of Apple’s Newton revival are starting to trickle and David Sieger of Seeking Alpha has pieced together his impressions of the forthcoming UMC to create the image above. Apparently he has received some inside info and reports that the new Newton will be designed to be held laterally with one concave button on each side of the screen. Sieger also reports that Apple has expressed a great deal of interest in a 5.2" 800 x 480 pixel touchscreen manufactured by Balda, Apple’s current iPhone screen supplier. Couple that with multi-source confirmation that the Newton will feature an on-screen keyboard as opposed to a physical board and Sieger might actually be onto something with this mock up. So far we don’t have any confirmed sightings of the Newton in the wild so only time will tell in terms of how accurate his graphical interpretation might be.

Having room for error on typing on a cell phone is one thing but until its spot on, no keyboard for a Touch Screen UMC like this is going to be hard to swallow especially with the price that will come with it.

This wont be an iphone. This will probably be more an e-book reader like the Kindle.

Seriously a umpc with out a decent keybord pass the hunt and peck touch screen wouldn’t hack iþ in coorperate america rather hav an htc advantage it’s a phone with a umpc built in. An probably costs less. What’s next the iRAN?

I agree that the typing is what would make or brake the device. I have no problems on the iphone but on the umpc it needs to perfect to sell the device. Their touch extensions of the OS are very good so I cannot imagine them not using them in some form for a pc.

Apple is really getting to the point where they’ll toss anything out there. This doesn’t look like anything major, at least compared to their other products. I’m a big fan of Apple, but this isn’t something I see hitting it big.
As for BGR and the articles…while I like the site and will continue on reading, it is becoming more and more like Engadget.
