Apple gearing up for online movie rental service?
We’ve heard rumblings of this one before, so we won’t hold our breath until we have something tangible in front of us, but word on the street is that Apple has signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to bring movie rentals to desktops everywhere. According to Mac Rumors, Apple and Fox have already inked the paper that will allow consumers to rent Fox movies for a specified period of time by way of iTunes. There’s no word on rental period of price, but we think they’d have to slide in around the $3-5 mark to win us over. The service will apparently be launched and announced on the 15th of January, coinciding with a certain annual Apple convention known as "Macworld".

This isn’t new I will still with Netflixs
I’m all for it. If they get enough movies and put them in HD then the AppleTV looks like a pretty good product. Or allow the new ipods to push HD through video out.
im with jdh on this one
sorry Idon’twant sonthing you you don’t need itunes for.
once again apples closed itunes platfomss fails and a rental service thats already slatherd with enoungh drm as it is uh-uh
Galvatron, you really think iTunes is a failure? maybe for you but its a been a huge success for Apple. I agree that DRM is not good but there’s DRM on almost all DVD, I’m just happy that I can get them without the disks.
If you don;t like the closed platform then go use whatever else you want, they are not forcing you to use their products. Nothing has changed in the years you have been beating that dead horse.
I ise automatix an xine
I love the idea, but the problem remains getting the content from iTunes to something upon which I’d want to watch a movie. My PC isn’t it. my iPod nano and its itty-bitty screen isn’t it. Apple TV in its current form doesn’t do much for me – I’ve got enough shiny boxes already, and don’t need a box that has a hard drive but isn’t a DVR. That’s why the news that Apple is licensing FairPlay to Fox for DVDs is just as big a part of this story – maybe Apple will either improve Apple TV or license the DRM to someone who will make something better.
All Apple needs to do is update the Apple TV software to do two things:
1. Make movies downloadable directly from iTunes, similar to the way music can be downloaded to the iPod Touch.
2. Enable the external USB port on the Apple TV to store media files.
Let’s see what happen at Macworld.
Good Luck!
