Sony to stop making rear-projection TVs, sticking with LCDs

This is actually pretty shocking, guys. Sony’s rumored to be pulling the plug on all rear-projection TVs and devoting all production to LCDs. As owners of the XBR2 and XBR5 series, we can fully understand Sony’s move here. After all, they’re kickin’ ass! This isn’t confirmed yet, but a company spokesperson supposedly said, "we are moving our resources more toward LCD TV, because that’s what people really want." If you’ve got a pending order for a KDSZ70XBR5 it looks as if that order will never be filled and will be cancelled. Additionally, orders for the KDF46E3000 and KDS60A3000 models aren’t guaranteed either. We’d say get to it if you really want one of those, but let’s not kid ourselves. Pickup an XBR4 or XBR5 LCD and enjoy it!

What have they been waiting for? It’s about time they pull the plug.

well the kds-xxa3000s are the second best rated hdtv (of any technology) right behind the pioneer kuro plasma on cnet.com. so in actuality, it’s a step backwards in terms of picture quality.

they’ll make replacement parts for years to come. just because they quit making a tv doesn’t mean they don’t support their existing customers.

i highly recommend picking one of these up asap before they’re all gone.

I think this sucks! Sony has offered the SXRD 70″ on their dealer order sheets. It’s wrong to pull the plug on them without honoring existing orders. Many customers have been counting on this TV. I designed an entire entertainment system and built in cabinets around this unit and decided to hold off until the new model was (supposedly) available in Jan 2008. Now I get to try to find another TV in the same price point that will deliver comparable quality. I know one thing – I will not buy Sony!!! What a terrible customer service decision. See ya Sony!

I think this is unfortunate. I am a huge fan of Sony, I think they make the best televisions out there, hands down, and all my electonics purchases are Sony. My best friend and I both own SXRDs; he has a 60″ 2000 series and I have a 50″ 2020. I believe this is the best TV out there. The best LCDs (even Sony!) still have artifacting and motion blur, and I still haven’t found a better color scheme on any TV than on the SXRD. I was looking to buy a 60″ or larger SXRD for my basement a couple years from now. It’s a shame that won’t happen now.
