Photo of the Sony Ericsson P5i Leaked

Everyone loves leaks and according to some info on the Esato forum, a beta tester has leaked a live photo and some specs on what looks to be Sony Ericsson’s entry into the "iPhone catchup game". Sony Ericsson has been manufacturing touchscreen devices for quite some time but even still, the hardware and UI in the image above look pretty familiar. Like its predecessors, the P5i will be home to the Symbian UIQ OS but according to rumors it may be one of the first Sony Ericssons to see the upcoming UIQ4 OS. Other rumored specs from the forum include a slider form-factor, 2.8" display (640 x 480), integrated WiFi and GPS, 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity, 360 MHz processor and 160MB of internal memory. The P5i should be released into the wild sometime in Q1 / Q2 2008 and if it lines up with the rumored specs it could be quite a contender.

No word yet but with specs like that it definitely won’t be cheap! I definitely can’t wait to see how they play with UIQ to compete in the UI wars that we’ll see more and more of in 2008…

    Great!

But I bet it won’t support GSM 850 or our 3G bandwidths.

If it does, I’ll be out of Tilt mode fast and back to UIQ!

I would tend to agree with you @Richard. Although, since Nokia is beginning to take the US market MUCH more seriously with their higher-end devices it’s only a matter of time before others follow suite.

I like that SE is aiming more in the smartphone competition and all while still trying to keep it entertainment wise like the W960 walkman series. Its just I wish they choose a different os. Every symbian device I have or had always had problems and would crash occasionally. The only systems I see that are very well constructed and stable are Window Mobile devices and the iphone os. With the new w960 everytime I turn on the wireless lan apps would crash left and right and just force reset the phone, not the first symbian device I tested that would go nuts after a while. I can see why Sony took so long to release the w960, I bet we wont see this device till the 3rd - 4th Qtr of ‘08

A lot of the problems with Symbian in the past (crashes etc like you say) were largely due to lack of RAM. Starting with newer devices like the N95-3, N81 and N82 the issue has finally been addressed (128MB) and I would assume that this will carry over to all new devices moving forward. Fingers crossed!
