Sprint WiMax coming in early 2008?

Looks like Sprint is buckling up to spread the joy of mobile WiMax in Q1 2008. First it’s going to be a customer trial, then they gear up for a full commercial launch in Q2. They are already planning a soft launch within a week for employees in Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington D.C, then from there they’d obviously expand the coverage. Sprint promised to run trials on the network by the end of this year, and by running this soft launch they’re able to uphold the self-imposed deadline. The Xohm, as the Sprint project is called, has been highly anticipated in the industry because of its speed and network reach. We’re suckers for widespread connectivity, so get a move on it Sprint, we’re excited to see how this develops, and we’ve already put some popcorn in the microwave.

Will any existing devices work on WiMax, e.g., Mogul? Touch?

Or will it work only with new yet to be announced devices?

Just one question: Will WiMax serve as an upgrade to current and future devices, or is it a hardware upgrade?

good move. faster they roll it out the better, they can pick up customers because they will be the best for data depending on coverage.
VZW moving towards their next data roll out as well.
Come on AT&T you cant even get you 3G out and they guys are one or two steps ahead.

Wait so will WiMax work on current sprint devices such as the pearl? And what exactly is it? If I understand correctly this means faster data speeds right?

Wimax is not a backwards compatible upgrade to current devices, it is a 4G network platform and will require a hardware upgrade. However most devices will be dual or tri-mode as the wimax rollout won’t be available everywhere, be on the lookout for wimax/cdma wimax/wifi, etc.

The only hybrid CDMA/WiMAX devices will be datacards. Sprint already anounced that thier CDMA network will be thier only one for voice coverage for the next sevral years, which is one of the many reasons why they’re using the name Xohm. However nothings going to stop people from using skype-enables WiMAX devices :P
