BlackBerry 9000 specs revealed, our early Christmas present to you
Let’s start this off this by stating there’s more to this device than what will be listed. This is just what’s known at this point, although these details have yet to be confirmed as final specifications. One of the BlackBerry 9000 devices will sport a screen with the dimensions of 480 x 320 (or maybe that’s 320 x 480), 1GB of on-board memory, and an Intel XScale PXA270 processor at 624MHz, clocking in slightly faster than the 620MHz ARM 1173 processor found in the iPhone. The BlackBerry 9000 will also sport the dual-threat of GPS and WiFi as well as introducing 3G support (multi-band HSDPA) to the GSM carrier family devices, answering the prayers of many of us. At this point in time, there’s no update to the camera, which remains at 2 megapixels, although we’re hearing there is the possibility of seeing a 3.2 megapixel camera at launch. You all know the drill! Rest of the goodies, after the break!
No features, both software and hardware, that are currently enabled in OS 4.3 and above will be missing from the 9000-series family. This doesn’t rule out a major change in direction for the BlackBerry OS, as there is a strong possibility that what we’ll see in the future will either be completely different, or at least it will look the part of a distant - but more intelligent and handsome - cousin.
Barring a massive breakthrough in pixels per inch capacity in the 480 x 320 resolution, with the obvious increase in real estate, you have to wonder what will become of our beloved keyboard. We have yet to hear any final details in this arena, but this certainly will make for loads of speculation, both on the internet and off-net, of a touch screen or slider device. We’re not holding our breath with regards to the near-term introduction of any non-standard keyboard layouts from Research In Motion, though.
As you might have guessed, there’s no pricing or availability information for this device. If you want our opinion and pure speculation for a release date, based on the information we have, we’d expect this to drop sometime in Q1 - Q2 2008. Bring it, RIM!

not something the average blackberry user would want, but its defintly going to attrack some new customers and its a goodway to expand.

I think this is a great concept phone and if it’s able to be released Q1/Q2 of 2008, all the better.
RIM understands that more and more consumers are going after smartphones and the iPhone has opened that door more now than ever. I’m certain that RIM can do a better job than Apple did and if what we’re seeing here is what will actually be then I’m excited about it and will be getting one.
Great report. Hope we get more details soon.

whats the deal with that “warehouse door” style slide out keyboard that we saw a couple months back. Wasnt that sleighted for the 9000 series?

The speedy development is due to the fact that RIMM is licensing all hardware and touch screen technology patents directly from Apple.
As most of the touch screen technology is patented by Apple, the cooperation with Apple helps Research in Motion to bring new devices to the market much master than previously anticipated.
RIMM is adapting this successful strategy from MICROSOFT - selling 2.class technology at a premium to unsavy computer users (and those who prefer spending time with setting up their devices, contact support hotlines and fiddling with their products instead of using it for the purpose they’re sold to be used for).
RIMM, once again, drawing from close looks at Apple’s and Microsofts products, decided to make their own case design and interface because the original Apple designs are just to easy to use and to cool looking.
The new Phone will be available in second half of 2008 at between 799-999 USD.

I can recall 2 blackouts in the past 3 years. Big deal. It’s still 100 times more reliable than anything else on the market.

I’m trying to figure out how the author determines the processor is faster.
what bogomips chart are you looking at?
as far as I know ARM processors are RISC and do more calculations per clock cycle.
any thoughts ?

The price of GPS enabled smart phones should drop in the near future with development of the new co-processor architecture of CellGuides new CGX5900 ultra-miniature GPS co-processor. The CGX5900 is quoted by CellGuide as having a huge 70% cost advantage over dedicated GPS receiver chips such as the SiRF Star III in the BlackBerry 9000.
No wonder SiRF have been talking to Intel recently.
There’s more details at http://gpstekreviews.com/2007/12/07/aclys-gps-receiver-chip-70-cost-reduction-breakthrough/

I’m listening RIM, but know this… no QWERTY, no sale. Seriously, if I wanted an iToy phone, I’d have bought one by now.

What the hell do all u care if they come out with new concepts. I love the idea of no keyboard, however if u can’t live without it don’t get it and leave it to people that enjoy touchscreens aswell as bb service n shut up

And what the hell do you care if people think the new concept is ass? I love the idea of a keyboard, however if you can’t live with it, don’t get it and leave it to people that enjoy keyboards as well as BB service and shut up.
See how that works, but with better spelling?

Will it be available in the middle east? I wanna have one for me!! How much will it cost me?

If the stories are true I would buy it for 1000 right now. I use to be a phone junkie. I picked up my first blackberry when the curve came out and I have been really impressed. It blows windows mobile away with ease of use, speed, and e-mail. This bb 9000 would be a god sent.

Not a tech person or a phone junkie, just a regula consumer…I agree with BB King, my first multimedia phone was a Windows Mobile phone…when it was broke my carrier gave me a Blackberry loaner to use and that was the end of me using anything else. My 9 year has a Pearl and I have a Curve…this is the easiest phone I have ever used and the e-mail and messaging is second to none, if a 9XXXX series came out I would give it a try…however no keyboard worries me a little

I love innovation! The fact that BB has tried to reach out and market new users is the main reason why I came over to the BB family in the first place. I use to think that a BB was totally business and not very attractive. The pearl was my first Berry and now I have a curve…w/ or w/out a keyboard I’ll continue to follow the BB series wherever they decide to take us in the future…Bring on the 9000 series!!!

I hope this thing comes out soon! And that it doesn’t have the touch screen like that of the iPhone. I enjoy the keyboard (currently have a 8700) because texting is fun and typing is made easier.
I have a friend who is a Genius at an Apple store in NYC. He was given an iPhone, used it for a few months, and now switching back to BB! He likes the media and internet browsing features of the iPhone, but can’t stand the touch screen keyboard. It is uncomfortable and difficult to type he says. For those of you with big hands, typing may be frustrating on a touch screen keyboard.
Personally, I like BB’s original ideas, and hope they don’t stray from it. So I’m for a full keyboard.
