BlackBerry 9000 specs revealed, our early Christmas present to you

Let’s start this off this by stating there’s more to this device than what will be listed. This is just what’s known at this point, although these details have yet to be confirmed as final specifications. One of the BlackBerry 9000 devices will sport a screen with the dimensions of 480 x 320 (or maybe that’s 320 x 480), 1GB of on-board memory, and an Intel XScale PXA270 processor at 624MHz, clocking in slightly faster than the 620MHz ARM 1173 processor found in the iPhone. The BlackBerry 9000 will also sport the dual-threat of GPS and WiFi as well as introducing 3G support (multi-band HSDPA) to the GSM carrier family devices, answering the prayers of many of us. At this point in time, there’s no update to the camera, which remains at 2 megapixels, although we’re hearing there is the possibility of seeing a 3.2 megapixel camera at launch. You all know the drill! Rest of the goodies, after the break!

No features, both software and hardware, that are currently enabled in OS 4.3 and above will be missing from the 9000-series family. This doesn’t rule out a major change in direction for the BlackBerry OS, as there is a strong possibility that what we’ll see in the future will either be completely different, or at least it will look the part of a distant - but more intelligent and handsome - cousin.

Barring a massive breakthrough in pixels per inch capacity in the 480 x 320 resolution, with the obvious increase in real estate, you have to wonder what will become of our beloved keyboard. We have yet to hear any final details in this arena, but this certainly will make for loads of speculation, both on the internet and off-net, of a touch screen or slider device. We’re not holding our breath with regards to the near-term introduction of any non-standard keyboard layouts from Research In Motion, though.

As you might have guessed, there’s no pricing or availability information for this device. If you want our opinion and pure speculation for a release date, based on the information we have, we’d expect this to drop sometime in Q1 – Q2 2008. Bring it, RIM!

BGR used to be a respectful site like this, but lately there have been some posted stories that are ruining the quality of this once great site. This whole thing is complete BS and will bet the author of this story a total of $500 that this will not come out this year, or will have specs FAR LESS than the one he is quoting. I can’t believe the BS coming out of this place.

Um, Christopher Cox, it says that it is expected Q1 or Q2 of next year. What makes you think BGR is saying it will come out this year???

Read before rant is a good rule of thumb.

@ Ghost NYC: Yeah, they put in the application for the “garage door” keyboard… Not sure if they secured the patent though. BG… Any update on that patent app?

Well, I think that this would be a very interesting device to see. My big concern is losing the keyboard, but if they can come up with a good plan, like that of the garage door style keyboard, then I think this device will be a hit. You will have a great HUGE screen, fast machine w/ 3g service… This sounds like a super BB to me!

This is the impact I was hoping the iphone would have on the competitors! At first, due to service providers, phone makers didn’t dare to have WiFi enabled devices; until the iphone came!! This device looks awesome, it’s not only the way it looks but also the integration that it has in a business environment.
    Let the competition begin!!

As long as the keyboard layout is comfortable, fast, and reliable (no mushy keypad or easy breaking), I could care less how futuristic they get. A reliable OS + excellent keyboard + PUSH email will ALWAYS be their winning combination (if they know what’s good for them).

No internal pictures, No leaked internal documents stating any specs to confirm ANY of this…BGR is feeding us vaporware at this point…this has been played out..and for the love of god get rid of that photo”chopped” pic, i’m tired of seeing it all over the net being praised as being real.

You guys never get the dates right, and you never learn either.

Based on your prediction, I predict we will not see a 9000 before Q3 2008.

do you guys not remember the patent that showed its face a while back? The whole garage door concept with the roll back keyboard. I believe thats what is to become of at least one of the newer blackberries. I know that all patents do not make it..but judging by the specs of the screen resolution this could be true….

Just something to throw in the mix and think about….

Too bad BB’s build quality is still so poor. I’d be wary of any advanced construction like a touchscreen.

    b.N,

Totally agree. The reliabilty, stability, ease of use, and PUSH e-mail, are paramount in what a good smartphone should be about.

These are things that RIM do exceedingly well, and one hopes they will strive to continue to do so.

I want to see the scrolling keyboard. it sounds a lot better than Sony Ericsson’s solution to this problem, which is rather botched on the p900. Oh, and can rim please for the sake of it’s devout followers, start using Qtopia?

If 3g hurts the usual stellar battery life im gonna pass…Also, if theres no slide out keyboard
and have to rely soly on a virtual key board..NO…without a actual keyboard with tactile feeling…A major segment of BB audience will pass on this….

Really, the iPhone has a 620mhz CPU? You’re sure that’s not to draw more people in to think they’re getting their money’s worth? That thing doesn’t run like it has a good CPU.

Come on people is this really what we want from rim?? do we want a iphone wanna be?? a htc wanna be?? or do we just want from rim what they do best make a good keyboard, great push email, the reasons we all fell in love with them in the first place. If you want a touch screen get a treo/iphone you want a slide keyboard get a HTC product. We forcing rim to keep up with the other companies but the truth is other companies are trying to keep up with rim so what do you all really want???

When will they update their 8707 line of UMTS 2100 devices ??!?? It would be nice if they could make their 3G devices truly world-wide since 3G in Japan IS UMTS!

Jeff B, I think your losing any cred when you say the iphone doesn’t run fast. It has its shortcomings but the speed of menus and browsing are not a problem. It is fast.

I agree that the timing is way off on this, but they will try not to release it after iphone2.
