Well, I just upgraded to WM 6.1 today without a hitch. Used a free backup/restore software to save my contacts (http://www.dotfred.net), used active sync to explore the phone and copy most files “just in case”. I was bummed the GPS didn’t work with google maps but they did include a 4 day trial of the sprint navigator, then did a google search and came here and found the COM4 setting for the gps, went and stood by the window and it works!!! Both google maps and MS Maps. Outside of the task manager, the other updates don’t do anything for me. I still have to get RDP and PDANet running again, but I’m a happy camper now with GPS. The phone just paid for itself again…

i loaded Visualgps but says cannot initialize com buffer size–not that I think it will work anyway

I need to find someone in S. California to meke my Mogul do gps with tomtom or one that tells turn on Main St. I can pay. k90802@yahoo

so a regular GPS device does not require a service subscription. Why the hell does a sprint phone with GPS cap. need to subscribe for $10 a month?

For those like myself that anxiously followed all threads related to the Mogul’s GPS:

The firmware was released on Monday, March 10, 2008. I have it installed, and here’s the scoop (you’ll want to search the ‘net for details):

1. The gpsOne operates in stand-alone mode. Awesome. Even with no Sprint service, the GPS works perfectly. Again, AWESOME.

2. The GPS is mapped to COM4. You will have to configure your “External GPS” phone setting (easy).

3. There IS an excellent GPS antenna in the phone. I actually get better reception than Bluetooth GPS devices, especially indoors.

4. TomTom. If you want to use a TomTom, it doesn’t seem to “trigger” the internal GPS. You have to run a program like “VisualGPSce”, then run TomTom. Hardly an issue. For Google Maps, it works without that trick. I would install VisualGPSce anyway, because it’s a good GPS testing tool. Some day there will be a tool to trigger it in the background without a GUI. Be patient. It’s not a show-stopper.

5. There now is a task manager icon in the start menu next to the clock, and it makes closing applications much easier. Nice.

Actually I have the new ROM running on my phone now and it is awesome. The GPS does work in standalone mode as I have put my phone into airplane mode and the GPS sats are still picked up and routing. Here is the official link for anyone having trouble downloading.

Actually, since it is a gpsOne chip, it can operate in 4 modes. Sprint cashes in on the assisted mode. Hopefully, the firmware will unlock mode 1, the standalone mode:

gpsOne Operational Modes:

1. Standalone – Your handset has no connection to the network, and uses only the GPS satellite signals it can currently receive to try and establish a location.

2. MS Based – Your handset is connected to the network, and uses the GPS signals + a location signal from the network.

3. MS Assisted – Your handset is connected to the network, uses GPS signals + a location signal then relays its ‘fix’ to the server, which then uses the signal strength from your phone to the network towers to further plot your position. You can still maintain voice communication in this scenario, but not ‘Internet/Network service’ ie Web Browser, IM, streaming TV etc..

4. MS Assisted/Hybrid – Same as above, but network functionality remains. Normally only in areas with exceptional coverage.

Pretty much EVERY phone GPS is not intended to be used as a standalone GPS. They all work with the internet to computer you approximate location.

there is an assistetd gps chip in the mogul that needs o be activated in the new firmware. recently, someone leaked a test copy of the firmware, with working evdo rev a and gps through google maps or tomtom navigator. there’s more on ppcgeeks or howardforums

I think I have a strong feeling it’s going to be only the Sprint GPS that you’ll wind up having to pay monthly for.

I don’t think the phone it self has a GPS radio built into it so it’s probably Sprint’s own technology picking up from their towers.

In regards to bluehorseshoe,

I currently have two accounts. One with AT&T which I use for voice and my second account which is Sprint due to it’s faster internet connection that’s available in more areas.

Take into consideration that Sprint SERO offers you unlimited text and data starting at $30.00 throw in an additional discount and I’m paying 22.50 a month for it.

as a mogul owner…I hope this is true. But wasn’t a mogul torn down and they realized the gps chip wasn’t the type for stand alone use?

Doesn’t matter, all we know is that the Kaiser is HTC’s flagship and the Mogul is not.
