New Maxtor drives come complete with Trojan, Chinese government to blame?
This has "PR Nightmare" (and perhaps "Security Crisis") written all over it. It seems that 1,800 brand new 500GB Maxtor Essentials external hard drives have been shipped with a Trojan preinstalled. When used, the Trojan prompts the drive to forward information about the data contained on the disk to one of 2 websites, www.nice8.org and www.we168.org. Both of these sites are registered in Beijing, China. Weird, right? Here’s where it gets even stickier. The Taipei Times seems to think that the Chinese government is behind the malware installation. According to the paper, "In recent years, the Chinese government has run an aggressive spying program relying on information technology and the Internet, the (investigation) bureau said. The bureau said this was the first time it had found that Trojan horse viruses had been placed on hard discs before they even reach the market." We’re a bit hesitant to pass judgement here, but given the tenuous nature of Taiwan’s relationship with China, we suppose this sort of thing isn’t out the question.
need a second source for the govt. involvement, and i think tenuous could be the understatement of the year. Kind of like Iran has a tenuous relationship with Israel.
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that anything coming out of China has been crap?… lead in toys, toxins in food, trojans in hard drives,… etc etc etc…

Yeah…I agree with most of the comments. Bias my hairy backside. The lead, the killer Rophie-laced aqua dot toys. This is a total Cold War between the Communist Chinese authorities and the west, especially the USA. They are buying the country right out from under us. Don’t believe me? Look at any train across the country and you will see Shin Pe or Cosco-the China Overland Sea Corp. trailers for sure. They are everywhere. In the past four months, I have seen them everywhere from Alaska to Florida! They are trying to destroy our morale, steal our information and crash our infrastructure and weaken our economy. It is a TOTAL cold war. People just haven’t seen it yet. I’ve got nothing against chinese folks; it’s their government that pays the thousands of state-employed spies and hackers. Go out on the net and find the security warnings and memos yourself!
