Microsoft working on a photo sharing site
If the rumors are true, we could have our very own Microsoft-branded Flickr alternative before too long. Microsoft recently posted a job listing with the following position description:
"This feature team is building a next-generation photo and video sharing service that will compete with Flickr, SmugMug and other photo web solutions today. This is a ‘v1′ opportunity. This role will work across the new Windows Live division with teams like Spaces, SkyDrive, Messenger and Hotmail to construct a winning strategy for Microsoft in photo and video sharing. "The new service will apparently function as a coherently branded offshoot of the company’s current Windows Live suit of online services.
Video sharing, huh? Sounds pretty good to us. They’re apparently planning on integrating the as-yet-unnamed service with all of their current multimedia-capable devices, including PCs, Xbox 360s, and (we assume) Zunes. No word on when exactly we might see the project’s public product, but we’ll stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.
Yeah, well being incapable of coming up with new ideas leads to Microsoft always delving into “me too” efforts.
Plan for this to be Windows Vista-only, and likely they’ll push their new psedo-jpeg format on you as the way to save you from evils of non-Microsoft file formats.
Hmmm…another copycat solution brought to you by MS. Remember Microsoft’s attempt at Social Networking to take on Myspace and Facebook – anyone recall Wallop.com?! Guess not!
