Google releases Android SDK

A month ago uttering the phrase "Android SDK" would have elicited little more than "whaat?" Thankfully Google has infused the term with a sense of meaning and urgency. As promised, the company released it’s software developers kit for the upcoming Android mobile phone platform. The SDK itself is cross-platform compatible, running on XP, Vista, OS X 10.4.8 or higher, and various flavors of Linux. While the actual Android platform has yet to see the light of day, it’s nice to know that developers will have a sizable head start, theoretically allowing them to get their applications ready to launch concurrently with the first Android-based devices sometime in the first half of 2008. As an added incentive, the "Open Handset Alliance" has started a contest that will furnish a total of $10 million to various applications deemed worthy of fanfare. Let the games begin!

I like the idea of the SDK but I was hoping they’d release the platform as well. Is that going to happen or is that for OEM’s only to see?

So many ideas of things to put on the Android, too bad I’m not a programer / developer. I’m guessing you need coding experience and the Android SDK isn’t just a GUI?

It looks like everything Apple wanted the iPhone to be but came up short. Heres to hoping the actual phone part of it works as good as the rest. Something Apple should have done before releasing the iPhone.

The videos on their site show a little preview of some of the capabilities (full html internet, google maps with street view, google earth, etc). This is going to be very, very slick. All of the “wow factor” of the iPhone, but without the Apple chauvinism and protection.

Its funny. I have read alot of blogs about Android but this is the first where it wasn’t getting bashed. I think the people on this board see it for what it is. A Beta OS at best. I’m not sure what people thought it would be but from the video’s it looks very promising. So much so I’m waiting for my next phone.

John C. do you even know what chauvinism is? cause i think you misused it.

Rosegold, youtube looks good with the conversion to the 264 files.

Feech, it does look promising but they have been working on it for a long time and its not really anything new. People bash apple for putting existing products together to make great devices, well google is doing the same thing with this OS.
