BlackBerry Pearl 8130 unboxing!
One of our readers sent in these pics of the new Verizon BlackBerry Pearl 8130, and we have to say, we’re jealous! You know the specs by now: 1xTT / Ev-DO, Bluetooth, 2 megapixel camera with video recording, external MicroSD slot, SureType keyboard, etc. Click on to the gallery below, and you’ll see exactly what we’re seeing — Verizon people, for the first time we might actually enV you — the BlackBerry 8830 looks like a monster next to this!
Thanks, MarvONE!

I received mine on Monday, and I have to say, you should be envious. Pictures do not do this little gem justice.
I couldn’t be happier. VZW UI, you’re dead to me.

Man…i hate silver. Does this have wi-fi? Verizon data plans are killer expensive.
…So the big question…upgrade to this BB or wait for the CURVE??

Must admit a little jealous..
One thing I’m not jealous of is Verizon’s VERY expensive data/blackberry packages.
Re: Mike - I don’t believe the 8130 supports wi-fi (only the 8120 GSM version). It does however support GPS.

The new BIS plan is 29.99. So, if you don’t need BES, Verizon’s data pricing is no longer an issue.
This one doesn’t have wifi. It has GPS, though it’s locked to VZNav.

I got mine yesterday. For whatever reason, Verizon cannot activate it because they have no record of my account or the order. After 2 hours on the phone with them, I just threw it in the corner. I already miss T-Mobile…

I’ve had it for a week now and I never thought I’d say this about a phone but it is too small! I feel like I’m holding a credit card to my ear with my fingertips. Keyboard is also frustrating to use.

Thislittle bastard was worth the wait, and now it works on a REAL NETWROK…
Of course I’ll still get the CURVE whenever VZW offers it, but this will hold me over just fine…

What is it like to be riding Tmobiles coat-tails? I’ve had a pearl for a year.

You’ve had a watered down Pearl for over a year.
This thing’s a beast compared to that old thing.

Very true, the Pearl that Verizon and Sprint has put out totally kills the older Pearl. Think about it, EVDO, T-Mobile and AT&T internet speeds are compared to our 1XRTT speeds, while we have broadband, plus a 2meg camera with MMS, beat that.

@Ben Pike
You might be eligible for an early upgrade if you want to extend your contract for another 2 years. That’s what I did.
I would call Verizon to find out.

I would hit this up waaay before I hit up a Pearl on any other network. If this rocks the BB OS I would be on that piece man.

Another improvement is the vibrate. There are no missed calls now.
Suretype has gotten better and even gives you the opportunity to skip typing the whole word if it predicts what you are trying to type. It gets it right enough to make this a huge improvement and speed boost.

Regarding VZNav, now you can select a person or business in your address book and choose to see a map of their address or get a route to them with GPS guidance with just one click. I’m not sure, but can you do that with any of the free GPS programs?

So all of you new HORIZON crippled device owners are happy, your UI/GUI sucks and is crippled and your GPS is LOCKED down to 1 service.
Why the f*** would you need to track down someone on GPS, why not just call and say where are you? Oh and how much r u paying for that service to do that ? And you really need it for what purpose?

I got my device on Monday…this is the 5th BB model I have had…in reverse order….8130, 7130, 7250, 7750, 6750…remember the monochrome?… these were all VZ devices. I deliberately skipped the 8830 and have been waiting patiently for the Pearl.
——————————————–
First Impressions…
Size: Finally it has reached the level of a typical cell phone…easily 40 % smaller, and probably an ounce lighter, than the 7130 I just retired.
——————————————–
Call Quality: Good/Very Good…still very early…I have been playing with a new BT headset so its hard to really know yet.
——————————————–
Browser: Faster…however the number one issue here is signal strength…the browser finally supports many of the standards we have taken for granted in our desktop browsers…go to http://www.rocketshotz.com to find sites that will push the browser to its limits.
——————————————–
Mail: Same as it always was…rock solid and reliable…no too much new here. BES/BIS…whatever.
——————————————–
Killer App Candidates: Media Player, MMS and I am loving the VZ Navigator…but I have never used it on any other portable device, hopefully the honeymoon isn’t over too quickly. I do however have a TomTom that may begin to collect dust or worse be exiled to the island of misfit gagdets…it can keep the Palm III, iPAQ 5550 and Newton already lost in the Land of Obsolecence.
——————————————–
Can we please move on with the “na na na na na T-Mobile had it first” comments…and talk tech.
Also can someone explain to me how the Curve is going to eclipse this device.

I’ve had the T-Mobile pearl for a year now, which isn’t the greatest in high traffic areas, but overall has been decent. My only complaints are the speed of the browser, and the lack of suretype.
I popped into a VZW store to check out the new pearl…HOLY SHIT!! The browser was lightning fast. The phone also looks and feels a little firmer than the original.
I would like to see a side-by-side comparison of the browsing speed. Similar to the one boygenius did for the Curve from T-Mobile vs. AT&T.
So, the real question…is it worth an extra $50/ month to go back to Verizon. I’m a former subscriber, and while I admit that they have the best cell service, they also charge the most for it.
Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?
