Andriod is an open source mobile operating system analagous to Windows Mobile. It is not a vehicle for gathering information unless you use Google’s services. That would be no different than using your desktop computer. You are not tied to using Google. In fact, Andriod community encourages developers to write software for other communities, etc…

not so fast about your assestment of qcom, in fact,cdma was all the brain of wireless of 3g. next thing you know 4g is coming up soon, think about flarion tech they acquired of late, they owned 2500 patents of these advance generation or wireless!!

qualcomm being involved defeats the chance of this platform being open. Google should chose partners more carefully. Let qualcomm into the party is a nail in the coffin.

I’m incredibly underwhelmed by all of this. This has been in he rumors for along time and basicly its google leading the way on designing a new open source OS for mobile devices?
So if we are interested then we still pay Tmo or Sprint here in the US for our services but we get to use a different OS. Sorry but that doesn’t sound great or revolutionary to me.
I’m all for open source but unless that open source OS cuts my phone bill or data bill I will use whatever works the best for me.

PS and most HTC devices all look the same, they mentioned that these will not be branded google so the hardware will likely be the same as the HTC WM versions.

Great, sooner or later I’ll have to carry Google in my pocket whether I want to or not.

Wonderful. I hate to think of what Google will do with the information they collect off some ones cell phone.

At least now I can choose to NOT use Google apps that come pre-loaded on my phone, but with this, it sounds like you’ll eventually have to use something Google related.
