T-Mobile Shadow Unboxing

We’ll save you the gloating about how we did this first, and leaked this, and reported that before anyone, let’s just get to the damn device already! The T-Mobile Shadow is officially available today, and here are a couple of our first immediate impressions from the unit…It’s extremely small, and dare we say, fun to use? The scroll wheel takes a little getting used to and it doesn’t behave how you’d think. Each click on the scroll wheel isn’t a "click", you have to scroll the wheel almost 1/4 of the way to register a response. In addition to being the scroll wheel it is also a four-way navigational pad that helps when you want to zip through things instead of messing around pulling "wheelies." The T-Mobile Shadow features one of the best displays we’ve seen on a Windows Mobile device — so crisp and bright — totally hot! There’s a new homescreen UI on here, and basically what it does is simplify the most commonly used applications and functions to the main page of the phone. You can shoot off a text message, browse the web, connect to Wi-Fi, and more all with a few "scrolls" or clicks. The only major drawback to this device is that once you’re used to 3G, it is pretty hard to go back. But, if you’re riding it out on T-Mobile and want something a little more fun, you can’t beat the Shadow for only $149. Check out some snaps in our gallery!

Just spent 1/2 hour with the Shadow. I WANTED to love this phone….

But the screen had major viewing-angle issues – specifically when viewing in landscape mode (e.g., taking pics/video, viewing full-screen vids).

    Voice quality was good.

The slow processor was not a problem – it was pretty zippy.

And the UI was ok – a notch above WM6.0 – but i found myself wishing you could customize it more.

And the damn vol buttons are SO in the wrong place when you are handling the phone for cam/vids – I found myself constantly hitting them.

A few tweaks and this COULD be a great phone – let’s hope the next phone release in this ’shadow’ line fixes some of these problems.

Ok.. I took one on a 14 day trial because it was not nearly as big as I thought. This phone is not 5.2 oz.. it’s more like 4.2 oz on my postal scale, it’s barely bigger than the pearl.

So, Ive had it 2 days. Battery life is so so.. not so great but tolerable. Call quality is really good. It’s actually much nicer than I thought it would be.

I am thinking of keeping it. I have 14 days to return it, but so far I like it a lot. Nice color screen, decent camera, easy texting.. it’s actually a pretty fun phone.

As far as Rage saying it’s a crap piece, well.. most of tmobile phones are. Using the Tmobile scale of phones, it’s pretty nice.

The only bug I have noticed so far is when you type in a letter to search for a contact, it brings up multiple duplicates of the same contacts. If you go to the address book and scroll, it doesn’t do that, only when you type in the first letter (i.e, type in T to go to Tom) when it does that.

I also still have the pearl, and so far, I think I like this shadow a little bit better. It’s easier to type/text/email because the keys are slightly bigger.

Where did I say the phone was crap? You need to grow up bro. If you don’t like the phone, fine. State your reasons other than lame SIM swap issues that are not even a problem. You made that up.

It’s a great phone for the price. Probably the best phone for the money Tmobile offers. I’d rather spend 349 for this than 399 for a RAZR2.

I have had mine 1 week. It works well except that the battery starts to get weak after app 7 hours (with minimal use) and it has frozen on me twice. I have heard others complain of similar issues.
