AT&T Motorola Q9h Unboxing

What do we have here, guys? You all waited for it, you might even have shed blood for it, but it’s finally here in the flesh, and we’re super impressed! For starters, the early unit we had way back is a little different, and the changes on the new production unit are for the better. Let’s take the keyboard, for instance…before it was a rubberized texture, and while it was cool, it actually got in the way of speed-typing. The AT&T version has switched to completely plastic keys and we can bang out emails faster that you can say, "when can I get one." To answer that, we’re hearing the 1st of November will be the official launch date. We were a little disappointed that BlackBerry Connect wasn’t made available on the device like it was with the AT&T Tilt, but we guess it will come sooner or later. How about the speakers? I think it might be one of the loudest and clearest speakers on any  mobile device, it is that good! Another welcome addition is built-in GPS. Something that wasn’t even on our earlier at all, and it works very well. From the Pantech Duo, to the AT&T Tilt, to the Motorola Q9h, and the upcoming Blackjack II, you shouldn’t have any problem finding a Windows Mobile device on AT&T. Pricing wasn’t revealed to us just yet by our source, but we’ll update you as soon we know! Want to check out the pictures? Sure you do!

UPDATE: The Motorola Q9h does indeed come with an extended battery, and extended battery cover! From our not-so-scientific tests though, the standard battery is impressive all by itself!

UPDATE 2: Pricing should be $299.99 with a 2-year agreement, and $549.99 for full retail pricing.

Yeah you idiots, my phone doesn’t have international bands, or wifi, and I will never leave the country, but Paco is right. Even calling everybodys sexuality into question isn’t a problem, because he is so right.. Who wants to buy a phone that works for you, buy what Paco says!

Look, this phone SUCKS! I bought it and already returned it don’t get it. I paid way too much freaking money for something this dumb. I don’t know why TOOLBAGS like Mardenhill come on here bragging about their stupid ass corporate discount. The rest of us normal people are stuck paying full price while little bitches are bragging about how great the phone is when they don’t have to shell out the amount of money we did. In conclusion, don’t buy this shit, it isn’t worth the money and it doesn’t even have freaking WI-FI so how will little douche bags like Mardenhill check their blogs while they drink their peppermint mochas at Starbucks? Fags, pay the full price then tell me to buy it k???

well obviously Toniee doesn’t have a clue since my corporate discount equaled the same price as anyone who walked in off the street. Last time I checked $300 and $350 with a $50 mail in rebate equals $300. I was also within my window of upgrade so I could have purchased it as a new subscriber as well.

As for your potshots at my sexuality and coffee preferences, it just proves you still live in your parents basement, sit around playing dungeons and dragons and get off looking at free preview porn. Get a job and maybe just one day you will be able to afford a new phone.

This phone isn’t perfect but I don’t have a need for WiFi. If I have 3G support and unlimited data already, there is no need for it. If I did find myself in an area without service, I highly doubt they would have WiFi either.

I use Active Sync for my corporate email and I have setup pop3 as well.

If you want to create your own ringtones keep the bitrate under 128, I tried copying larger files and they wouldn’t show up. I saved them down to 96 and 300k in size and they worked.

i renewed my contract with at&t and got the Q for $250 upfront and a$50 mail-in rebate. for 200 bones still cheaper than an i-phone… granted it is missing wi-fi but Vegas is full 3G spot anyway… i am very happy.

What store location in Vegas did you get it at for $200? Out here in Southern Cali it’s $300. (after the rebates of course)

I just might go out to Vegas to play and buy myself a new phone :)

This morning (Nov 4 ‘07) the rebate has increased to $150 so the phone is $199 on ATT’s website.

It’s me again….Please discuss about the phone and it’s inferiority comparison to other phones in the market. Mardenhill, it’s nice to see females or gay socialites are into this phone as well. Please keep your lifestyle out of this discussion as it may hinder your ’straight’ judgement on this device. I have a lot of respect for your insight on this phone AND to come out of the closet in this message board is quite astonishing and remarkable. About you creating mp3 is old news and you can buy other phones in the market that has WIRELESS, that WORKS anywhere I go, and can add MP3’s on the device with no problem or manipulation. To go after Toniee is quite disturbing to us all and childish. Please keep your thoughts and liking to yourself and talk about the phone’s DISADVANTAGES….Thank you

Paco, I had a moto razr before which I created mp3 ringtone all the time. I tried saving these files which were between 500 and 600kb in size but none of them would show up on the Motorola Q9H. I simply stated that there is a file size limit with this phone which isn’t present on others and that is 300kb in size. If you want to create ringtones keep them around this size. You can increase the bitrate but you will end up with maybe 10 seconds max so its best to save it down to 96 bitrate.

This is a good website for additional software and I really like the Internet Radio application. You can program in your own stations and with the speaker it sounds great.

BTW, I know my phones, I am a Good Mobile Messaging and Blackberry Administrator and manage over 100 devices. I have played with most phones on the market and have decided for the price and features the Motorola Q9H is the best one. Since they changed the rebate price to $150 I went back to my ATT store and threatened to return my phone and rebuy it. They ended up crediting me $100 on my account which worked out better than waiting for a rebate check.

As for your pathetic cheap shots please read Toniee’s original posting he attacked me for no apparent reason and I was only defending myself. If you want discussions on phones and features just act civilized and refrain from 3rd grade taunts. I will discuss any device with you as long as you show me respect.

Paco… so far, everyone but you has spent time actually reviewing the device instead of criticizing other people for their information that they gave. If you want disadvantages to be given, either give them yourself or find a place elsewhere on the web that does.

    To everyone else…
I am considering buying this device, but I am not sure how it compares to the AT&T Tilt (my other option)
I might also consider the Blackberry Curve or an HP iPAQ.

Any advice people? Which ones the best in your opinion… as far as price goes, the Tilt is probably at the top and the Moto Q is at the bottom.

    Matt,

a few questions for you. Will you be using this in a corporate environment? If so does your company have a Good Mobile Messaging or Blackberry Enterprise server to connect to? With both Good Mobile Messaging and Blackberry there is a one time $99 license fee plus an additional $5 a month added onto your cell phone bill for the service. if your company is running Exchange 2003 you can take advantage of the Active Sync which will push your email in real time.

If you are not using this in the corporate world, I would recommend a windows device since Blackberrys on their own don’t offer much to an individual. None of them are on the 3G network and have limited applications that you can install.

My critera when deciding on a device was:

    3G
    GPS
    MicroSD
    Windows 6
    QWERTY Keyboard
    Size

I went with the Q because of all the features above and size did play a lot into it. I personally think the Tilt at 6oz too big. I am not a fan of slide keyboards either. If you think you need the full version of Windows and Wifi go for the Tilt otherwise I would stick with the Windows Smartphone. The full version will give you remote desktop, better file management, start menu (like real windows) and better office applications. The downside will be the battery life, these devices tend to burn thru your charge much faster.

I have found limitations with my Q, its not as fast as I would like and a few websites I was not able to navigate thru since I didn’t have a touchscreen or tab button. On the other hand, I love the keyboard, the simple operating system, all the apps available for downloads and the ease of use. Its not an iPhone but I will wait for the 2nd generation before jumping ship. I just ordered a 4gb MicroSD card and will load that up with mp3s.

    I hope this helps.

Did anyone ever get clarity on how to get the GPS to work with Google Maps? I can’t figure it out; it’s never worked for me. And AT&T tech support doesn’t want to tell you because they’d prefer to sell you Telenav. HELP!

I can’t seem to get Google Maps to work. Each time I try it just installs the file by ovwerwriting the previous install and goes no where. Is there a particular setting issue?
    Thanks
