AT&T Motorola Q9h Unboxing

What do we have here, guys? You all waited for it, you might even have shed blood for it, but it’s finally here in the flesh, and we’re super impressed! For starters, the early unit we had way back is a little different, and the changes on the new production unit are for the better. Let’s take the keyboard, for instance…before it was a rubberized texture, and while it was cool, it actually got in the way of speed-typing. The AT&T version has switched to completely plastic keys and we can bang out emails faster that you can say, "when can I get one." To answer that, we’re hearing the 1st of November will be the official launch date. We were a little disappointed that BlackBerry Connect wasn’t made available on the device like it was with the AT&T Tilt, but we guess it will come sooner or later. How about the speakers? I think it might be one of the loudest and clearest speakers on any  mobile device, it is that good! Another welcome addition is built-in GPS. Something that wasn’t even on our earlier at all, and it works very well. From the Pantech Duo, to the AT&T Tilt, to the Motorola Q9h, and the upcoming Blackjack II, you shouldn’t have any problem finding a Windows Mobile device on AT&T. Pricing wasn’t revealed to us just yet by our source, but we’ll update you as soon we know! Want to check out the pictures? Sure you do!

UPDATE: The Motorola Q9h does indeed come with an extended battery, and extended battery cover! From our not-so-scientific tests though, the standard battery is impressive all by itself!

UPDATE 2: Pricing should be $299.99 with a 2-year agreement, and $549.99 for full retail pricing.

Are the dimensions of this phone the same as the Verizon Q9m?

I saw the phone at the Verizon store and was actually a little disappointed (when compared to my BJ). It is much larger than I anticipated in both width and thickness. In addition, there is a frame around the screen that makes the screen look very small.

I really need/want a GSM smartphone with at least 400mhz, scroll wheel, WM6 and Blackberry Connect. Doesn’t seem like a tall order but for some reason no one has it all.

Guess I will stick with my iPhone and cross my fingers someone makes a BBconnect app for it.

I picked one up on Monday, my store had just received 5 of them. I had been waiting since August when BGR started the launch date rumors. Anyways it was well worth the wait, you have 3G support (HSPDA 3.6mps not that AT&T has the bandwidth yet), 2 megapixel camera with flash, GPS, Windows Mobile 6 and a decent amount of RAM. I signed up for the Telenav for 30 days and love it, I may actually keep the service. The speaker is very loud and windows media player can play mp3s. They keyboard is easy to type on and Active Sync was a breeze to setup.

The only drawback to the Q9 is no Wi-Fi, and no international 3G bands, just the US bands. Other than that, there isn’t anything to complain about!

No Wifi, no sale. Am I the only one who thinks at&t’s data plan prices are obscene?

    So a few questions.

    - Should I get the Q9 or the BB 8310?

    - Does Google Maps work with the built-in GPS or are we locked into Telenav?

My biggest complaints around the non-BlackBerry devices that run BlackBerry connect is that they don’t sync properly with Exchange. If I move the message within Outlook to a folder, most often the message is left in the INBOX on the device. BlackBerries do this so much better. I’m so ready to chuck my Nokia E62 due to this limitation.

Google Maps works great with the built-in GPS — not locked to TeleNav.

I got mine on Monday as well and I have agree about the speaker. It’s loud as is the ear piece. The LOUDEST phone I’ve had with AT&T. The signal strength is also amazing. I live in a 3G area but never had the 3G signal at home. Now I get full bars and 3G anywhere in the house. I use the Windows Live as and it works great too but if you want a real GPS experience, Telenav is well worth the money.

Motorola really did a super nice job with this one. Best device I’ve ever had and I have had them all.

You can get the Smarthphone personal max for $29.99. The price isn’t that bad. :-/

I’ve been looking forward to this phone for quite a while. For some reason, the screen appeares smaller than I thought it in earlier photos. Definitely want to test the device. If it meets my expectations, I’ll buy it. :-)

Does it have internet connect/sharing to tether to a laptop?

Does anyone know if the BJ2 has this either?

I get a corporate rate thru my company which is 40% off manufactured retail price which ended up being $300. If you are available to buy at the new customer/upgrade price, its $350 with a $50 mail in rebate. I went with my corporate plan to avoid waiting for a rebate check but it came out to the same. I do think $300 is a bit high but I had been waiting for months and couldn’t put it off any longer. I expect a price drop in the next few months.

    All of you are DICKS!!!!
If there is no wi-fi and no international usage then why buy. Stop arguing and do something about this. I read people bragging on the look…”oh, it’s so sleek and nice-looking”. Damn! Then ask it out on a date! All I care about are if the features will enable me to work and function anywhere I go. Not about the looks! Fags!

I’d get the 8320 .. has Wifi and the BIS data packages are MUCH cheaper. You get more bang for the buck.

If you don’t want to do TMO then get the 8310. :D I love my 8320.

Blackberry connect will be out 90 days after release.

It does tether. It just needs the 59.99 plan for that.

It’s a heck of a lot better than the Verizon version.

I’m in NJ. Just got mine tonight at an AT&T store.

FYI - Those that have iphones (like me) - if you put your SIM into the Q9 and it goes on 3G the data will not work. When I called customer service they said that they would have to remove my iphone plan and replace it with a regular voice/data plan, and of course, the iphone wouldn’t work because according to them it wouldn’t be registered.

However, while waiting on hold my phone went to the Edge network and the browser started working. The data will work, but only if the phone is on Edge. So I installed BandSwitch to force it to Edge. We’ll see if this is indeed a permanent fix.

Bottom line- if you’re sharing a SIM with an iphone and a 3G phone you’ve got issues. Thanks to a well thought-out service, AT&T.
