HP to offer Sprint Ev-DO Rev. A with Notebooks

HP is set to begin offering Ev-DO Rev. A radios embedded in their upcoming lines of notebook and tablet PCs. This will most likely serve as a welcome addition to any HP customers in search of a mobile broadband solution, and should free up that Express Card slot for more useful functions. Bear in mind that you’ll still be subject to a 2 year Sprint contract, $60 monthly fee, and miserable Sprint coverage, but if HP is your poison of choice, then we have no choice but to recommend this option. The service will be available on HP’s 6510b, 6910p and 8510 series laptops. Surf away.

Sprint’s coverage is on a par with vzw (at least in the cities I regularly visit) and their network is quite a bit better. The latency is slightly lower and that’s the killer with EVDO if you do any kind of ssh-based work.

Plus they’re not calling 5Mb per month ‘unlimited’ data.

Sprint coverage is way better than AT&T and T-Mobile. It is very similar to Verizon.

Talk to people who have the different services and look at the coverage maps in the US. Just because your in bed with AT&T doesn’t mean they have the best coverage. They don’t.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold up people! Please check the name of the author of this article before making accusations. Josh has had Sprint for a while and finally gave it up for T-Mobile because of his problems with coverage. This post contains his personal opinions, not the opinions of the site.

Is this service only for sprint? Can’t it be used with any other carriers outside the US?

This is the most biased reporting I’ve ever seen. Sprint has the LARGEST 3G network in the US, and to call it “miserable” just defies description.

Sprint has the largest EV-DO network, Verizon has the most Rev A coverage, and AT&T is the miserable one, with a patchy UMTS and 1.8 HSDPA network that often drops to EDGE/GPRS for no reason.

If I could have two technologies in one phone, I’d select Sprint for data and T-Mobile for voice.

OK, just read BG’s comment, but still, my point stands. To call the largest network “miserable” is dishonest.

Easy on the old Sprint network….their data is the best thing they’ve got going! I mean how many customer service and billing issues can their be with a TRUE unlimited data plan at 59.99 a month. It’s pretty hard to screw up that bill! Plus I’ve used my data card in the car on my way from Phoenix to Okalhoma City and it’s been faster than my home network from Quest.

Why is everyone getting so but hurt over an users opinion of Sprint service? If their coverage sucked for him, it sucks for him.

Sprint does not work great everywhere. Not everyone lives in a metro area and EVDO roaming is not available everywhere either.

As for Sprint having the largest owned EVDO network, just how many POPS does their network cover compared to Verizon Wireless. Stats please.

I think you just explained why people are upset about Josh’s bashing of sprint.

    “it sucks for him”

And its one thing for someone to say it in the comments but something completely different to be a BGR writer and bash Sprint whenever possible.

Atleast BG makes the clarification, Joshua just throws these things out.
His opinion is just that, shouldn’t be portrayed as the site’s opinion.

I don’t mind the humor/cynicism. That said, AT&T would have my business if they had some 3G here in Denver. Sprint’s EV-DO covers everywhere around here.

BTW - those HP business notebooks are very nice. About Latitude level, not quite ThinkPad.

From what I found via a quick Google search:

Sprint - 207M POPs and 320,000 square miles
Verizon - 208M POPs and 270,000 square miles

I’m certain this changes weekly. Fair enough to state they are equal?

Just had to throw my hat in the pro-Sprint ring. Their EvDO coverage (combined with their EvDO-enabled Alltel roaming) kicks everyone else up and down the avenue. It’s one thing to have beef with a carrier, but to slam them on the one metric they’re actually not doing poorly in (coverage) is a low blow.

Now if you’d said “miserable CS,” I’d be with you. Although even that’s getting better.

Terrible Sprint coverage? Are you serious? They have the largest nationwide footprint for Data. Sure they don’t go internationally, but they’re coverage on the stateside is the best. Better than Verizon, Better than At&T, better than T-Mobile.

get off you AT&T sybian and state the truth

That’s not Sprint’s coverage you are talking about. That’s roaming partner coverage. Some roaming partners absolutely suck. Some affiliate market partners absolutely suck.

However, Sprint works fine in Los Angeles, CA.

It seems Sprint has a lot of fans here. I have Sprint as well, so I won’t make any comment on that. I like BGR and I think as a reporter or journalist, you should not choose any side, just be neutral. Because every company has its loyal customers. And what works for you, might not work for others. I hate this company and that service will never end.
I went to the mall once time with a friend and a Verizon wireless sales rep asked my friend what kind of wireless provider did my friend have and my friend said T-Mobile. He said T-Mobile sucked, switched to Verizon, it’s better. I don’t know how better but as soon as I heard that, I told my friend don’t get it and let walk away. That’s a stupid way trying to get customer. Guess what, T-Mobile works better for him in his town than Verizon.
Just choose what work in your area, I think it’s the best.
